Find a Shelter Near You
Whether you found a stray animal outside or are looking for a new pet to bring into your home, your first task is finding a shelter near you. Many shelters will only allow you to bring in animals that were found in a certain city or county, so it's important to find the closest shelter if you're bringing in a stray animal. If you're looking to adopt a pet, you can visit any shelter you're willing to drive to.
Instructions
1. Visit Adopt-a-Pet.com. From this website, you can find the shelter that's closest to your home or closest to the area where you found the stray animal. Just enter you ZIP code and search under under which type of pet you are looking for. A list of shelters will appear for you to choose from.
2. Talk to your veterinarian and ask if he has any recommendations regarding animal shelters. Veterinarians are not only in the right field, but talk to people about their pets all day, often giving them valuable information to share with others.
3. Contact animal control in your region. They often utilize the local shelters and they will be able to provide you with the knowledge they have. They may also have information pertaining to which shelters are no-kill shelters and which aren't.
4. Find your local branch of the ASPCA through the organization's website. Call them and ask which shelters in your area they recommend and make sure to ask them why.
5. Talk to people you know. With so many people adopting from shelters these days, you're bound to find people you know who are willing to talk about their experiences, plus the pros and cons of the shelters near you.
