Qualifications For Correctional Officer In Maryland

Being a correctional officer can be an exciting, challenging career. As of 2009, the salary for Maryland state correctional officers ranged from $35,700 to $50,563 a year, depending on experience.


Correctional officers are responsible for overseeing of prisoners in jail.


Minimum Qualifications


To apply for a position as a correctional officer in Maryland, you must be at least 21 years old and have a high school diploma or GED.


Testing


To take the correctional officer test, you must bring a photo ID. Veterans must bring a copy of their DD-214. You should allow up to five hours to complete this test.


Training


Before you begin training, you must successfully pass a background check, a physical examination and a psychological evaluation. You must also provide proof that you are a U.S. citizen or a resident alien allowed to work in the U.S.


Selection


If you meet the minimum requirements and pass the preliminary testing, you will go on the waiting list. Three categories separate the candidates on the list: best qualified, better qualified and qualified.


Correctional Officers


Maryland correctional officers must be on call 24 hours a day and are subject to random drug testing. If driving is required while on the job, officers must have a valid Maryland driver's license.
