Train A Puppy To Heel

Teaching your puppy to heel will keep both it and you safe on a walk.

Heel is one of the most essential commands for your puppy to learn. Heeling requires the dog to walk next to you without pulling and tugging on the leash. This command will not only make your walks more enjoyable for both of you, but will also help prevent your dog from running into traffic, chasing after an animal or hurting itself by pulling too hard on the leash. Practice makes perfect, so train with your dog several times a day while it is a puppy and once every few days as it grows older.

Instructions

1. Attach the leash to your puppy's collar.

2. Stand up and ask your puppy to sit so your leg is on your left. Praise it for sitting. Hold the leash in your left hand with your hand down by your side. With your right hand, grab the end of the leash. Keep your right elbow bent at your side.

3. Slap your hand on your leg, right next to the puppy's head and say, "Heel." At the same time, starting with your left leg, walk at a steady pace. Praise it as soon as it walks in the direction you are going.

4. Keep tension on the leash as you walk to remind the puppy to stay by your side. After walking 5-10 feet, stop and tell it to "Sit." Praise the puppy for the good job and offer a treat. Repeat the exercise for 30 minutes, remembering to praise it for a good job.
