You can save a life by adopting a puppy.
Most people have a tough time visiting an animal shelter and not walking away with a new pet. But taking home a new puppy takes more preparation than simply purchasing a collar, a leash and some dog food. According to the Miami-Dade County Department of Animal Services, there are a few restrictions that apply before you can adopt.
Instructions
1. Be prepared to adopt. Sure, that puppy in the window looks cute, but are you ready to take care of it? Being a pet owner means committing to your new pet for its entire life, which could be longer than 15 years! Also, be prepared to provide training for your new puppy and to incur the costs of food, veterinary visits, emergency health issues, grooming and more.
2. Review the Miami-Dade County adoption requirements. According to the Department of Animal Services, you must be at least 18 years old and a Miami resident in order to adopt a puppy. Adoption fees range from $115 to $185 and include up-to-date vaccinations for your new pet. You'll also need identification and proof of Miami residence in order to adopt. Come prepared with a collar and a leash to take your new pet home. If your new dog has not been spayed or neutered, you will be required to fill out a form stating that you will take care of sterilizing your pet.
3. Train your new pet. The best way to ensure a happy life for your new puppy--and for you and your family--is to hire a trainer to work with your dog. Obedience classes will socialize your dog properly and teach it to respond to your commands so you can enjoy a lifetime with an obedient, friendly dog.
