Fly With A Small Dog

Get your dog ready to fly before you actually board the plane.

Make traveling on a plane with a small dog hassle-free with a little pre-trip planning. Airline rules regarding pet travel differ tremendously, so ask about an airline's regulations before you book a ticket. Do not fly if your dog is not well, and allow extra time at the airport to deal with unforeseen holdups.

Instructions

1. Familiarize yourself with airline rules. To fly in the cabin, dogs must be in a carrier that can fit under the seat in front of you. Airlines may also have rules regarding an animal's health, age and immunization record.

2. Before purchasing your ticket, call the airline to make sure there is space for your dog. Most airlines allow a limited number of animals per flight. Once you have confirmed that there is room, purchase your ticket and pay the fees for your pet.

3. Purchase an FDA-approved carrier. The carrier must be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you. Your dog must have room to stand, turn around, sit and lie down in a natural position, and the carrier must accommodate air circulation. To help your pet feel more comfortable, put him in the carrier for small trips in the car or let him sleep in the carrier at home so it is a familiar place to be.

4. Plan to walk your dog as close to boarding time as possible, to avoid flying while your dog has a full bladder. Carry a leash and take the dog outside at the airport, leaving time to go through security and find your gate.

5. Bring a small dish for water and a water bottle, along with a bag of treats. If your pet likes to chew, include a chew toy or bone. Pack extra food in case you are stranded at the airport or delayed.
