Transport Your Pet Overseas

Make the proper arrangements for your pet's move overseas.

An overseas move is a logistical challenge. When you add transporting pets to the equation it becomes even more challenging. Knowing the best and safest way to transport your pet can ease the transition for both you and your furry family member.

Instructions

1. Find out the destination country's policy on pets entering the country. Many countries require certain health records and some require a quarantine period.

2. Take your pet to the veterinarian for a checkup. Nearly all countries require a rabies certificate and some require more. Talk with your vet about how well he thinks your pet will handle the stress of travel. He may have suggestions to make the trip easier.

3. Determine how much money you have to fund the transport. You may have to pay duty and quarantine costs. If the country requires that the pet be quarantined, call the quarantine center and find out what the quality of care is and if they will have a veterinarian on staff in case of an emergency.

4. Consider hiring a pet relocation service. These services are familiar with the rules of airlines and foreign countries and with the needs of your pet. It may be worth the money if the logistics of your move are tricky.

5. Check with the airlines to find out their rules on traveling with pets. Small pets may be able to travel in the cabin if they are in a soft-sided carrier and fit under the seat in front of you. Larger animals will need to travel as baggage or cargo. Many airlines won't transport animals during the extreme temperatures of the summer because of concerns about the pet's health if the plane must sit on the runway for long periods of time.

6. Place familiar items, such as old blankets that smell like your family and favorite toys, in the crate with your pet. If your pet has to spend months in quarantine, these items will help him feel more comfortable.

7. Take your pet to the airport and hand her over to the airline personnel. Know what to expect at your destination. Your pet may be taken directly to a quarantine facility. Find out what the conditions in the facility are like and how often the pets are visited by a worker. Also find out if the facility has a veterinarian on site.

8. Pick up your pet. If no quarantine is necessary, you should be able to pick up your pet immediately. If your pet must spend time in quarantine, find out when you can pick up your pet. Get phone numbers for the facility so you can call to check on your pet.
