Training
Being a dentist is specialized work that requires years of training. This training comes through hands-on as well as theoretical training over several years as a dental student.
Hourly Wage
Although dentists do not charge by the hour, the mean hourly wage for the general dentist comes out to a little under $75.00 per hour, according to the May 2008 occupational employment statistics put out by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Progression
Because dental school is such a costly proposition, many dentists have to take out loans to pay for their education. In order to pay off the loans, most dentists will work extra hours early on in their careers, and then scale back to an ordinary 40-hour work week.
Equipment Costs
Equipment costs are high when you're a dentist, thanks to specialized equipment and evolving technology. Many dentists, when purchasing a new piece of equipment, will put in extra hours to pay off the equipment costs.
Holidays
Most dentists take major holidays off. A few will do emergency dental work during a holiday period and will charge accordingly.
