Southern California Edison Scholarships are a group of scholarships given annually by the Southern California Edison Power Company. These scholarships are awarded to graduating high school students in Southern California who plan to attend college and pursue a degree in a subject area related to the work of the Southern California Edison company. Approximately 75 Southern California Edison Scholarships are awarded each year.
Academic Eligibility
In order to be eligible to receive a Southern California Edison Scholarship, an applicant must have a grade point average of at least 2.5 on a scale of 4.0. In addition, he must have taken either the EAP, ACT or SAT exam. Lastly, the student must be pursuing a degree in one of the following fields: math, chemistry, physics, computer engineering, computer science, materials science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or chemical engineering.
Other Requirements
In addition to meeting the academic requirements for the scholarship, applicants must also meet several other requirements: The student must be a citizen or legal resident of the United States. She must also attend a private or public high school in an area served by the Southern California Edison Company. In addition, the student must plan to attend a four-year college or university that is within or adjacent to the area served by Southern California Edison, and must plan to attend on a full-time basis.
Award Amount
Southern California Edison Scholarships are awarded in the amount of $2,500 per academic year. Southern California Edison Scholarships may be renewed for up to three additional years, for a total award amount of $10,000 over the course of four years. Scholarship recipients may only renew their scholarship as long as they continue to meet the eligibility requirements for the scholarship. Southern California Edison Scholarships may not be used to pay for graduate study, even if a recipient attains his bachelor's degree in less than four years.
Application Process
The Southern California Edison Scholarship is administered by the organization Scholarship America. The annual deadline for application is March 1. To be considered, an applicant must complete an application and send it to Scholarship America's Scholarship Management Services Department. In addition to a completed application, an applicant must also provide a current and complete high school transcript, a copy of test results from the EAP, ACT or SAT exam, and financial information completed by the applicant's parent or guardian.
