Locate An Animal Shelter

Animal shelters perform a number of services in a community. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) notes that animal shelters house homeless animals, provide pet adoption services, and respond to reports of animal cruelty in your community. Locating an animal shelter is an easy process.

Instructions

Find an animal shelter

1. Locate an animal shelter by searching through the online search tool developed by the ASPCA. ASPCA's tool allows you to search by Zip code or city, and it lists all animal shelters in the area, not just ASPCA chapters. Search results provide full contact information for the shelters, as well as identifying which ones participate in special animal adoption programs.

2. Find an animal shelter by searching through the online directories at Adopt-a-Pet. Developed and managed by the Humane America Animal Foundation, Adopt-a-Pet provides a complete list, sorted by city and zip code, of all animal shelters in the area, as well as the kinds of animals the shelter keeps. Complete contact information for the shelters and key staff are available, as well as details about each shelter's rescue operations.

3. Search for an animal shelter in the U.S. or Canada by using the online search tools and directories at animalshelter.org. The site provides individual links to each state's animal shelters, as well as offering a search function that allows users to find shelters within range of a specific zip code. A link to search for animal shelters in Canada is also available.
