Re-Home a Pet on Craigslist
No one wants to give up a special pet, but sometimes it can't be avoided. Job changes, family changes or even just a lack of compatibility can make re-homing a pet necessary. A popular way of finding a new home for a pet is to post on Craigslist. However, it is important to know properly re-home a pet.
Instructions
1. Determine the type of home your pet needs. A large dog might need a spacious yard or a playful kitten might need an owner who is ready to play. Consider whether your pet will do well with other animals in the home or if she needs to be the only one.
2. Decide the type of environment in which you want your pet to live. For example, you may want your cat to stay indoors if it has always lived that way. Additionally, consider how you feel about the new owners having kids or being gone from the house most of the time.
3. Set a reasonable re-homing fee to ensure that your pet is valued by the new owners. Craigslist recommends that users not post “free to good home” ads because this opens pets up to potential abuse. The last thing you want is your kitten to be fed to a snake or your puppy to be put in a dog fight. Typically, about $50 is considered reasonable.
4. Screen potential adopters when they contact you. Ask questions about where your pet will live, sleep, play, eat and be cared for. If you have any concerns, plan a time to visit the new home before committing to let them have your pet.
5. Arrange a smooth transfer for the pet. A visit to the new home before being left there permanently can help a lot. If this isn’t an option, then allow plenty of time to hang around and let your pet get used to the new surroundings before you leave.
6. Stay in touch with the new owners if possible. Ask for an email address or phone number so that you can check in on your pet. The new owners might even be willing to send you pictures or updates occasionally.
