See Sea Turtles In Hawaii

A green sea turtle under water in Hawaii.

Sea turtles are spectacular creatures to view and appreciate from a distance. In Hawaii, the green sea turtle has a special name, "honu," and it is a protected species. People are not allowed to get within 20 feet of the turtles. However, there are many opportunities to see the turtles on land and in water.

Instructions

1. Snorkel or dive in area's with protected reef. Sea turtles often take refuge in the reef area, where they can feed and hide from predators. The turtles have no natural fear of people and will sometimes swim with a human visitor.

2. Look for areas where there is seaweed on the rocks and near the shore. Honu eat seaweed and sea grass. They may come ashore to find loose seaweed.

3. Book a trip with a tour company that includes visits to the reefs. Many companies will go to the turtles feeding areas. You can enjoy a boat ride and then snorkel and swim with the turtles.

4. Visit the north shore of Oahu at Laniakea beach, where the honu enjoy basking in the sun. This is the most popular place for photographers looking for a shot of a sea turtle on land.

5. Rent a kayak and paddle around in reef areas. The sea turtles can often be seen from kayaks and surf boards.

6. Visit Kailua Beach, Turtle Bay resort, Punaluu Black Sand Beach, or Waimea Bay to observe the sea turtles swimming and playing in the waves. They will not necessarily come up on the shore, but they can be seen in the water.
