Be a Foster Parent for Orphaned Puppies and Kittens
Very often, underage puppies and kittens are brought to shelters without their mothers--and need to be properly cared for in order to survive--then they can be adopted into permanent homes when they come of age at about 8 weeks old. Here are ways to become a volunteer foster "parent" and help save puppies and kittens!
Instructions
1. Decide if being a foster parent to underage puppies or kittens is right for you. You will be responsible for feeding and caring for the puppies or kittens, as well as making sure they receive any necessary medical attention. You should be able to provide a clean, safe environment, as well as a lot of love and patience.
2. Fill out an application at your local animal shelter that offers a volunteer foster program for puppies and kittens. There are shelters throughout the United States and Canada that offer this type of program (see Resources below for shelters in your area).
3. If your application is approved you will be scheduled for an orientation (parenting class) where you will be asked to present a picture I.D. Some shelters permit minors (ages 16 and 17) to be fosters, but they must present a minor consent form filled out and signed by a parent or guardian, as well as attend the orientation with a parent or guardian.
4. The shelter will normally provide you with a starter kit, including an ongoing supply of milk replacement, as well as provide any necessary veterinary care. If you seek veterinary care elsewhere, you will normally be responsible for covering the cost.
5. Once the puppies or kittens are of age you will return them to the shelter to await their adoption into new homes.
