Donate Blankets

Donating blankets to a local cause is a generous and nurturing way to support your community. There seems to be no end to the different organizations and institutions that can use good, clean blankets. Perhaps you have cleaned out your attic and are looking to place 1 blanket or your faith-based group is trying to collect a few dozen to donate to a local charity. Either way, there are options to ensure a place for your generosity.

Instructions

1. Research community services in your area. Homeless and domestic violence shelters are always in need of blankets. The Salvation Army is a good place to start. You may also want to contact your local police and fire departments and ask where your donation would do the most good. You may have blankets that have seen better days, but a local animal shelter or animal rescue group would be able to put those tattered blankets to work, making a needy dog or a cat more comfortable.

2. Contact friends and family and ask if they have blankets to donate. You may discover that instead of donating 1 blanket, you may get to deliver 20.

3. Clean the blanket before donating. Run the blanket through the washing machine if it's not new or newly crafted. This will be appreciated by the receiving charity. If it's wool, you can wash it on the delicate cycle, but remember to hang it up to dry; don't throw it in the dryer or it will shrink.

4. Prepare your blanket for donation by folding and placing it either in a large plastic bag or into a cardboard box. This will help keep it clean and make it easier to transport. You can also help the donation site by clearly labeling the contents of the bag or box.

5. Locate a drop-off point and deliver your donation. When you contact the charity, it will provide information about where to deliver your blankets and what time of day is best. The organization will also be able to give you good directions on get there. A large organization, like the Salvation Army, generally has multiple drop points in larger cities. If you don't have transportation to take your donation or have other mobility concerns, contact the charity and usually a representative will assist you if your donation is large enough.
