Grout absorbs dog urine if improperly sealed, resulting in odor and discoloration.
A tiled floor is a popular choice for dog owners because it is easier to clean and maintain than carpet. Occasionally, your dog might have an accident indoors, causing an unsightly stain and pungent odor. If the dog urinates on the tile, it makes cleanup relatively easy, since the floor can be swept and mopped. Unfortunately, dog urine can sometimes soak into grout on tile floors, sealing the odor and staining the grout yellow. Cleaning is possible, though several attempts might be necessary to completely remove the stain. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Mix together 1 quart warm water and 1 ounce oxygen bleach. Pour the solution onto the urine-stained grout and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Scrub the stain with a stiff scrubbing brush to work the solution further into the stain. Rinse with clean water and remove liquid with a rag. Repeat if the stain remains.
2. Spray the urine-stained grout with an enzymatic pet stain cleaner, available from most pet stores. Leave the cleaner on the grout for at least five minutes to allow the enzymes time to digest the organic matter contained in the urine. Wipe up with a clean cloth and repeat if the stain remains.
3. Seal the grout once the dog urine stain has gone. Apply at least two coats of grout sealer using a paintbrush. The sealer makes any future dog urine bead on the grout rather than soaking in.
