Average National Salary Range


Many employers use average national salary ranges to determine a specific salary package for a new high school counselor. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in May of 2009, the mean annual wage for high school counselors was $55,030. The 50 percent median income level was $52,550. State University reports the median salary level at $45,570 per year.


Type of School


The type of school partially determines a counselor's annual wages. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in May of 2009, an elementary or secondary school counselor earned an average of $61,190 per year. Those employed at junior colleges earned $56,130 annually, and college-level counselors earned $49,050 per year.


Geographic Location


A high school counselor's geographic location influences her salary range. According to the bureau, the average annual salary in Missouri was $46,750. High school counselors in Louisiana and New York earned $50,430 and $61,020 respectively. The average salary in New Jersey came in highest at $71,600 per year.


Education


A high school counselor is licensed to practice and has an advanced degree in psychology or a related field. Most high school counselors have completed graduate level coursework. According to Education Portal, a master's degree is often required in order to receive licensure. A bachelor's degree in counseling or a related field qualifies an individual to work as a counseling aide or a social worker.
