The state of New Jersey includes three research universities and nine state colleges and universities, all of which are accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Accreditation confirms that the schools meet basic educational standards set by the commission. Rutgers University
One of the state's research universities, Rutgers University has more than 56,000 students spread across three campuses in Newark, New Brunswick and Camden. Rutgers also has an international reach, with 13,000 faculty members and nearly 400,000 alumni spread across the globe. The school offers more than 100 undergraduate majors and 180 graduate programs, including the only pharmacy school in New Jersey. Rutgers is the only New Jersey college that is a member of the Association of American Universities, an organization made up of the nation's top research universities.
New Jersey Institute of Technology
Newark's New Jersey Institute of Technology has an enrollment of just under 9,000 undergraduate students. The school offers 44 bachelor's degrees, 49 Master's programs and 19 doctoral programs spread among its six colleges: engineering, architecture, science and liberal arts, business and management, honors and computer science. Greek life is active on campus, and students can also get involved in more than 70 student organizations.
The College of New Jersey
The College of New Jersey, located in Ewing, has more than 6,000 undergraduate students. This selective school boasts an average SAT score of nearly 1300 for its incoming freshmen. Almost all freshmen, 95 percent, live on campus, and the school guarantees two years of on-campus housing for all students. The school's academic programs focus on liberal arts; colleges within the school include business, culture and society, education and arts and communication.
Montclair State University
Montclair State University has an enrollment of more than 18,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The school's academic scope is broad, as it offers nearly 300 academic programs at the undergraduate, graduate and certificate levels. Colleges include the College of Arts, College of Science and Mathematics and College of Business. Nearly 4,000 students live on campus in one of the school's eight residence halls. The school includes many student organizations as well as intramural activities for students.
