According to the Cat Fancy Association, the Maine Coon cat is among the ten most popular breeds of cats in America. Known mostly for their size, Maine Coon cats are the first native American long-haired cats. They are known for their loving nature, and many find their way into America's shelters.

1. Maine Coon cats come in a variety of colors and patterns.
Research Maine Coon cat rescue organizations online. There are several organizations dedicated to rescuing Maine Coon cats and finding them loving homes. If you are interested in adopting a Maine Coon or would like to learn more about this most unique breed of cat visit Maine Coon Companions at MaineCoonCompanions.net or Maine Coon Rescue at Maincoonrescue.net.
2. Check out Petfinder. Go to Petfinder.org, and perform a search. There is a drop-down list on the left side on Petfinder's home page. Use the drop down list to input Maine Coon under breed. You can also select your preference of age (baby, young, adult or senior) and gender. Input your zip code to find Maine Coon cats in rescue in your vicinity. If there is not one near you, don't worry. Most rescue organizations offer a free transport service.
3. Visit your local shelter or animal control facility. According to the Humane Society of the United States, an estimated 25 to 30 percent of all animals in shelters are purebred dogs or cats. There is a very good chance there will be a Maine Coon cat in a shelter near you. A Maine Coon or Maine Coon mix may be waiting for your at your local animal control facility as well. If they do not have a Maine Coon or Maine Coon mix at the present time, they may allow you to put your name on a waiting list or an alert list to get a phone call if one comes into the shelter.
4. Put the word out. Tell your friends, post it on Facebook, send out email blasts and let everyone know that you are in the market for a Maine Coon cat. Check online resources such as Craigslist.com and perform a search on Google using the keyword Maine Coon Rescue and your county.
