A Maltese with natural coat.
Maltese are the glamour dogs of the show world. Long, lush coats; a playful disposition; fierce devotion; and an attitude much too large for their small bodies personify this small breed of dog. Their long white coats are symbolic of their nature--pure and delicate. Taking good care of your Maltese will ensure a long, happy life together. One of the main requirements for any dog is a healthy diet.
Educate Yourself
Go to your local pet store and read the ingredients on the bags and cans of various types of dog foods. Look for real meat products as one of the first ingredients. Chicken, beef, pork, fish and lamb are the types of meats you want listed. Avoid ingredients such as "ground animal meal," as you have no idea what kind of meat that is, how old it is or what it is mixed with. Quality ingredients make a quality product. Avoid food with too many fillers. Keep in mind you want to get the small size kibble if you buy the hard dog food. If you choose to buy moist food, it is important to supplement it with crunchy food to keep your dog's teeth clean. Raw food can be hard to digest, so manufactured food is your best bet.
Quality Dog Food
Generally, the more expensive products have the better quality ingredients and are usually better for your dog. The old expression, "You get what you pay for," applies in this case. Brands such as Eukanuba, Science Diet and Maxxum are excellent choices. But less expensive brands, such as Purina, can still be a very solid choice for your Maltese.
Visit Your Veterinarian
No one can give you better advice for your dog than your veterinarian. They have the knowledge to evaluate your dog's health and condition, and tell you the brand, the amount and how often to feed. So make an appointment with your dog to go see your veterinarian.
