Information On The Labradoodle Dog Breed

Labradoodles love people.

The Labradoodle was the first popular crossbreed dog type. It is not recognized as a purebred dog by the American Kennel Club or the Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) although there are efforts to make this Labrador retriever and standard poodle cross a pure breed.

History

Wally Conran was a dog breeder for Royal Guide Dog Association Australia. He wanted to breed a guide dog that would be okay for people who were allergic to dogs. Poodles shed less dander than many other breeds of dogs, including the Labrador retriever.

Types

The Australian Labradoodle differs from the American Labradoodle. The Australian allows many breeds into the mix while the American will only have poodle and Labrador Retriever bloodlines.

Misconception

Although the original goal of crossing Labrador Retrievers and poodles were to get hypoallergenic dogs, this trait arises unpredictably in Labradoodle puppies. A person can still be allergic to a Labradoodle.

Appearance

Labradoodles differ radically in appearance due to which breed they most take after. Some have the Labrador’s coat while others have a curly poodle-type coat. They come in many different colors.

Size

There are two sizes of Labradoodles--the standard and the miniature. The standard can grow up to 29 inches high at the shoulder while the miniature grows up to 22 inches high at the shoulder.
