Write An Adoption Biography

Think carefully about the picture you wish to present in writing your adoption biography.

An adoption biography lays out the picture of who you are as parents and how you became who you are today. It will allow another family or social worker a glimpse into your past, your life and the stability you have to offer a child. Writing an adoption biography demands careful preparation and thought. Without this, your biography will be incomplete or difficult to follow.

Instructions

1. Reflect upon your life and who you consider yourself to be. The biography is meant to present a clear picture of your past and your personality. Write down several key phrases that you consider describe you.

2. Create a timeline of your life, starting with your earliest memory and progressing through the present. Even though you won't use all the information, the timeline will provide a springboard for further thoughts and ideas.

3. Outline the key events that have shaped your personality and current worldview. Jot down important facts about each event and the reason you want to include it.

4. Begin writing your adoption biography. Each point on your "key events" outline should correspond to a paragraph. Include the rich details that shape your memory, ensuring that your reader can pick up on the emotions and sensations involved.

5. Finish your biography with a concluding paragraph that states your current worldview. State what you believe to be true about life and morality in 4 to 6 sentences. For example, many people choose to write about their Christian heritage and beliefs or about how Islam has shaped their morals and life.

6. Proofread your biography. Check for proper grammar and spelling. Gather your final thoughts and make any changes to the tone or tenor of the biography.
