A number of dog shows regularly take place in the Philadelphia area. Depending on the scale of the show that you are after, you should be able to find something that you can sign your dog up for. Also, depending on the kind of shows that you might be interested in, there are different aspects of your dog that you can show off.

The National Dog Show

The National Dog Show is probably one of the most famous dog shows in the country. It takes place in the Philadelphia area. It is also one of the oldest ones out there and is regularly covered on television. In all, 2000 of the best show dogs make an appearance in this particular show.

The Kennel Club of Philadelphia Dog Show

The Kennel Club of Philadelphia dog show is held the day after the National Dog Show. This is another benched show and also has a reasonably high number of participants. The show boasts of a pretty good number of participants, many of which might be competing for prizes in segments that they lost out in the other benched dog shows. The two shows put together extend for up to four days in total, and are in fact two of the only remaining actively benched shows in the country today.

Categories and Disciplines within the Dog Shows

Dog shows normally have a multitude of disciplines and categories for you to sign up your dog in. There are seven distinct groups that have been earmarked. These include terrier group, toy group, working group, sporting group, hound group, non sporting group and herding group. Groups are again categorized into breeds. Once the dog is placed in the right group, the disciplines remain the same throughout the group. This includes best in breed, first in group and overall best in show. Each group will have one winner, which ultimately competes for the overall best in show prize.
