Find out adopt a released service dog in Ohio.
Service dog training programs are tough and unfortunately, not all the dogs that enter the program qualify for service. These dogs, known as career-change dogs, often train in other areas such as bomb or drug sniffing. However, some fortunate families get to welcome these dogs into their homes and hearts as faithful, well-trained pets. Adopting a released or career-change service dog in Ohio is well worth the effort for the easy companionship and love the dog will bring.
Instructions
1. Contact one of Ohio's many service dog programs to inquire about career-change dogs. 4 Paws for Ability and Wags 4 Kids are two of Ohio's non-profit organizations that raise, train and place service dogs. See Resources.
2. Go to the facility to check out the dogs available for adoption. Choose a dog that fits your personality, lifestyle and home life.
3. Fill out an application and pay any applicable adoption fees. Since service dogs require thousands of dollars in medical care and training, these programs may require adoption fees to make up for the cost of the dog to the non-profit program. Most will require an application to make sure they are placing the dog in a loving home.
4. Arrange for transport of the dog from the facility to your home once you have earned adoption approval.
5. Purchase the appropriate dog supplies to make your new canine companion comfortable in your home. This includes a dog bed or kennel, food and water bowls, toys, brush and any other accessories you prefer.
6. Check with the Ohio Dog License website to discover how and where to obtain a dog license as registration locations and fees vary by county (see Resources). Get your dog licensed within a week of adoption.
