What Is The Difference Between Female Shih Tzus And Male Shih Tzus

Shih tzus of either gender make great pets.

There aren't many physical or temperamental differences between male and female shih tzus. Both genders make excellent lap dogs and loyal companions.

Size

Male shih tzus are usually one or two inches taller than the female, according to Shih Tzu Information.com. Shih tzus average 8 to 11 inches high but individual shih tzus may be smaller or larger.

Price

Female shih tzus are usually more expensive than males because of the demand for breeding shih tzu puppies. However, adoption fees from shih tzu rescues usually are based on the age of the dog and not the gender.

Availability

Puppy mills and breeders generally keep females and sell the males. This means that shih tzu rescue groups and animal shelters usually have more males than females for adoption.

Health Problem

Both male and female shih tzus are prone to kidney problems, including kidney stones, according to veterinarian Dr. Bari Spielman. It's easier for a female to pass the stones than it is for a male shih tzu.

Misconception

Although it is generally assumed that female dogs are more timid than males, the Imperial Shih Tzu Information Society claims that there is usually no difference in the temperament between male and female shih tzus.
