The cost of raising a litter of puppies or kittens is more than the cost of a spay or neuter operation.
Pet overpopulation is a significant issue throughout the U.S. To prevent the problem, spay and neuter programs and advocacy groups have gone to great lengths to make pet owners aware of the repercussions of unplanned litters and offer necessary assistance. Many groups and programs exist with the sole purpose of helping those in need afford a spay or neuter. Local veterinary clinics or animal control officials may be able to give information about such programs in your area.
Spay-Neuter Assistance Program
Operating in many states, SNAP offers free spaying or neutering to qualifying families and reduced-cost spaying and neutering to the public. SNAP has a variety of mobile surgury units to treat animals in non-local areas, and also offers other services such as vaccination, deworming, heartworm prevention, microchipping, nail clipping, health testing and flea treatments. SNAP is run primarily on donations and volunteer effort.

Animal Compassion Network's Betty Fund
The Animal Compassion Network provides financial assistance to the Betty Fund Low-Income Spay/Neuter Assistance Program. The fund assists low-income pet owners, limiting their expenditures on a spay or neuter to a $25 co-pay. Proof of financial need is necessary to qualify for the program, which was initiated in honor of a stray dog named Betty, rescued with her eight puppies.
