4. Fill out an application when CHA or HACC's Section 8 waiting list reopens. The application gets you a spot on the wait list. When your name reaches the top of the list, a CHA or HACC representative will call you and schedule a meeting where you must confirm the information you submitted on your application. Most important, this includes verifying household composition using birth certificates and Social Security numbers, documenting income with tax returns and pay check stubs and providing the name and addresses of present and past landlords. You must complete academic and physical tests to become a firefighter with the NSW

The New South Wales Fire Brigade (NSWFB) is home to all New South Wales-based (NSW) firefighters. To join the NSWFB, you will need to go through a series of applications, background checks and academic and physical tests. Upon successful completion of the process--which may take 12 months or more--you may be offered a position.

Instructions

1. File an online application through the NSWFB website during a recruitment drive. These are held whenever the brigade is looking for new trainees and advertises on the site. Your application, which can only be lodged online, will be checked to ensure you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident and that you have at least a provisional P2 driver's license with a good driving record. You must also confirm your willingness to be stationed anywhere in Sydney as a firefighter and obtain a Medium Rigid Driver's Log Book, available though the RTA, before you begin training.

2. Complete an online assessment. If your application is accepted, you will be asked to take an Internet-based assessment of your knowledge and learning skills. The test will take about 25 minutes. According to the NSWFB, preparation is not necessary; the test is used to see what you know and how you learn.

3. Take a supervised assessment test. After your online assessment, you will be invited to the NSWFB Training College in Alexandria for a second assessment. An instructor will administer this to see how well you understand and follow directions as well as how you interact with the instructor and other potential trainees. Again, no preparation is required.

4. Pass the Physical Aptitude Test (PAT). The PAT tests your aerobic fitness, balance and strength. You will receive advance details on the activities you will need to complete and access to equipment to help you train. How long you need to train will depend upon your current fitness level.

5. Attend an interview. Once you successfully complete the PAT, you will interview before a panel including a representative of the NSWFB Human Resources division and two current NSWFB members. You will answer questions about your work experience and background and your understanding of the firefighter's role.

6. Have a medical assessment. If the interview committee selects you, the NSWFB medical staff will conduct a medical assessment during which they review your medical history and perform a physical exam. If you have a pre-existing condition, you are required to bring copies of your medical records and supporting information about your condition from your primary doctor. The NSWFB doctor to will use that data to determine if the condition will prevent you from service as a firefighter. Although a number of health problems could block your hiring, the NSWFB will not discuss your medical condition and its impact upon your career with you before you have undergone your medical assessment.

7. Pass a background check. This involves a national criminal records check and driving history check. Convictions and traffic violations will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

8. Accept an employment offer. If you have made it to this stage in the process, NSWFB may offer you employment and invite you to participate in their training program.

9. Complete training at the NSWFB Training College in Alexandria. The course is 16 weeks. After graduation, you will start your job.

Roundworms

Cats get roundworm infections by killing and eating infected rodents, or through the fecal leavings of infected cats. Roundworms look like live spaghetti noodles. They live in the intestinal tract and organs. The symptoms of roundworms are diarrhea, vomiting and a bloated appearance. If the worms get into the lungs, they can cause pneumonia. Roundworms are transmissible to humans, but the larvae do not develop into worms in a human. Instead, the larvae infect the liver, lungs, brain and eyes, and they cause a disease called toxocariasis. The symptoms of toxocariasis in humans include vision problems and eye inflammation. If the larval worms enter the lungs, the victim can develop fever, asthma or other respiratory issues such as pneumonia.

Hookworms

According to Cornell University, between 10 and 60 percent of cats are infected with hookworms. The worms can cause anemia in cats because they feed on blood from the intestines. This can eventually cause death in a cat. Hookworms can cause a skin infection in humans called cutaneous larval migrans.

Tapeworms

Cats get tapeworms by ingesting fleas. Tapeworms are long, slender, flat worms that live in the cat's small intestine. Small pieces of the worms break off and are passed in the cat's stool, where they look like grains of white rice. Tapeworms are transmissible to humans if the eggs are accidentally eaten. Humans with tapeworms can have stomach pain and tapeworm segments in the stool.

Toxoplasmosis

Stray cats can carry a disease called toxoplasmosis. This infection is caused by a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii, and it is spread through the feces of infected cats. Toxoplasmosis causes general, flu-like symptoms in young kittens as well as in humans. These symptoms can last for several weeks. In severe cases, cats can develop eye inflammations, hepatitis and enlarged lymph nodes. Toxoplasmosis causes brain or eye damage in people with weak immune systems. It also can cause long-term physical and mental problems for babies infected while still in the womb.

Cat Scratch Disease

Cat scratch disease is caused by a bacterium called Bartonella henselae. Humans can get the disease by being bitten or scratched by a cat. Kittens are more likely to carry the disease, but adult cats can carry it as well. A symptom of cat scratch disease is an infection at the site where they were bitten or scratched. The victim may also have a loss of appetite, lethargy, headache, swollen lymph nodes and fever. Cats with this disease do not show any symptoms, so there is no way to tell whether or not the animal is infected.

Clinics have only a set number they can do in one day, and you must make the appointment in advance. Most vets require payment at the time of service; however, some do allow clients to pay in installments.

2. Remove the kittens from their mother during feeding times, letting the kittens spend about 30 minutes at a time--a few times a day--trying out the solid food.

3. Begin gently handling the kittens at 4 weeks of age, socializing them to people and increasing their chances for a successful adoption.

4. Separate the kittens from their mother for a couple hours at a time, beginning a couple weeks after the kittens first sample solid food.

5. Increase the length of the time the kittens are away from their mother gradually over the next few weeks. Ensure the kittens have plenty of positive interaction with people during these times.

6. Make the kittens available for adoption at 12 weeks of age.

When the economy is rough, finding a summer job for teens can be equally as difficult as it can be for the rest of the population. But, for those who really want to work, there are summer jobs to be had.

1. Scan your local newspaper. Thanks to the popularity of online job search forums, the newspaper has gotten short shrift. But, the help wanted ads for low-paying jobs are still found in the paper. 2. Talk to your school counselor. Most school counselors can help you with applications if your idea of a "summer job" is working with other kids at summer camps for teens. And, your counselor likely has contacts "downtown" that can possibly point you toward employment within the city our county for the summer.

3. Talk to your church minister. Your minister is similar to the school counselor in a lot of respects. Churches also run summer long activity camps and you could be a helper or counselor.

4. Take out a classified ad in the local newspaper. When all else seems to not work, advertise yourself. "Motivated, responsible and honest teenager looking for summer work" is a quick starter. The key to the ad is to emphasize your positive character traits, your willingness to work and your flexibility for the summer. You might be surprised at how well your ad is received.

5. Start your own summertime business. Maybe a low-paying job isn't your cup of tea. Maybe the minister or counselor didn't have any good leads. If so, start your own business. If you have a lawnmower you are potentially hired already. Look for a niche that you can fill. Using the lawn mower example, you could provide simple yard work for people who don't normally have a weekly lawn guy coming in. Or, rent yourself out as a house and pet sitter. Transport An Injured Baby Bird

Many baby birds fall from their nests in springtime, but not all of them need to be taken to a rehabilitation center. Healthy birds should be put back into their nests where their parents will continue to look after them. However, if you find any baby birds with any signs of injury---blood, punctured skin or a broken wing---you need to take them to a wildlife rehabilitator or a veterinarian. Learn safely transport an injured baby bird by following these guidelines.

Instructions

1. Line a cardboard box with a soft towel. A shoebox is a good choice. Do not line the box with shredded newspaper or cotton as this can be tangled on the bird's legs or neck. Do not use grass because the moisture in the grass can give the baby bird a chill. Sometimes baby birds are found next to parts of its old nest. Do not use it to line the box as it may contain mites or other parasites.

2. Place the baby bird on the towel. Wrap a facial tissue or a towel around it to support the baby bird and help it to rest in an uncomfortable position. When the baby bird presents a wound, wash the wound with cotton and water before placing the bird on the towel.

3. Keep the baby bird warm, especially if it is featherless. Birds have a higher body temperature than humans, and they should be warm to the touch. Place a hot water bottle under the towel, so it does not burn the baby bird. Use plastic shampoo bottles if you don't have a bottle water. Fill them with warm water---not hot water---and place them under the towel. When using a heating pad, use a low setting and place it only under part of the box so the baby bird can move away from the heat if it needs to. Do not place the box in direct sunlight because the bird could quickly become overheated.

4. Punch a series of holes into the box lid. This provides the baby bird with privacy, security and ventilation.

5. Take the bird to a wildlife rehabilitation center.
