Search & Rescue Training For Puppies

In order for dogs to become search and rescue animals, they must undergo extensive training from an early age--when they are puppies, to be precise. The best time for young puppies to start with search and rescue training is actually between the third and seventh week of their lives because that is when the brain's "imprinting" process starts. That is the time when puppies gain the capability to have recognition of other animals and people. This is also when they begin to communicate.

Imprinting Stage

During the imprinting stage, a search and rescue trainer should make it a point to expose the puppy to interesting and fun experiences. These experiences should be specifically geared towards developing and stimulating the puppy's senses. They should focus on sight, touch, smell and hearing. The trainer should make sure the experiences are between themselves and the puppy but also with other dogs and groups of people.

Five to Six Weeks

When a puppy is between about five to six weeks in age, all of these behavioral experiences should be performed on a consistent and frequent basis. At this point, socialization and imprinting are both integral to the connections necessary for establishing bonds between the trainer and other people who will be interacting with the puppy in the future.

Authority

Puppies, during search and rescue training, also need to learn about authority from an early age. The trainer needs to make it understood (by the puppy) that he is the leader of the pack, so the puppy doesn't have obedience problems in the future. When a puppy is approximately three months old, his temperament might start evolving slightly, and this might cause the socialization process to become harder. By this time, the puppy's imprinting process should be ingrained in his brain, which will help make this time period less difficult for the trainer.

Communication

Beyond the third month of a search and rescue training puppy's life, it is important to focus on communication and interaction skills. This time period is essential because it will have a huge impact on the puppy's future behavior and character. The experiences that a puppy has during early puppyhood are vital for helping a puppy reach his highest potential. There is no specific type of breed of puppy that is better than others for becoming a search and rescue training puppy. 1. Tell your dog to bark.

Command your dog to start barking. If your dog does not bark on cue, use a trigger such as a knocking noise.

2. Give the dog a silencing command, such as "No bark" or "Quiet."

3. Treats are a handy tool.

Hold a dog treat in front of the dog's nose. Because the dog cannot sniff or lick at the treat and continue barking, it will most likely quiet down.

4. Praise the dog. After it has been silent for three to five seconds, reward it with the treat.

5. Repeat until you have a quiet pup.

Repeat the process. Gradually lengthen the amount of time you require the dog to remain silent before praising and rewarding with a treat. If you wait too long to reward the dog, it may grow frustrated and bark for the treat. If this happens, silence the dog again and repeat.

AHA-member professional humane animal organizations may receive the HomeAgain Universal WorldScan Grant, to purchase these scanners that read all microchips available in the United States. Applicants must submit data, including the operating budget, number of animals housed annually, intake, adoption and euthanasia rates, along with describing the need for scanners. Unlike a collar with identification information, microchips are permanent. The ability of a humane organization to check for and read microchip information on stray animals may make the difference in reuniting the pet and its owner.

Bernice Barbour Foundation

The Bernice Barbour Foundation provides funds to both animal welfare agencies and university veterinary schools. Its mission is to help organizations that protect companions animals, equines and wildlife. Only U.S.-based, nonprofit and non-governmental organizations that own their facilities may apply for grants. Animal welfare organizations must submit financial data for the year prior to application, and cannot use paid grant writers to fill out forms or supply information. Toxoplasmosis

Toxoplasmosis, caused by a parasite, makes you feel like you have the flu. Pregnant women are especially at risk. Symptoms include muscle aches and swollen lymph glands. It usually goes away on its own.

Hookworms and Roundworms

Kittens are especially likely to get worms, and these are expelled through the stool. People can also contract these worms after cleaning the litter box. They are treatable with medication.

Campylobacter and Salmonella

Both of these are bacteria that cause vomiting and diarrhea, cramping and fever. Campylobacter is more common in cat feces than salmonella. Treatment is not usually required.

Prevention

Wear rubber gloves when cleaning the litter box. Scoop frequently, as toxoplasmosis does not become contagious until two or three days after the feces have been deposited. Always wash your hands thoroughly after scooping.

Special Health Concerns

In general, women who are pregnant and anyone with a compromised immune system is better off leaving the litter-box cleaning to someone else. If you must do it, take the precautions described above. If you become infected, seek immediate treatment.

Bengal cats are a rare breed that was formed when breeders crossed domestic cats with the wild Asian Leopard Cat. Bengal cats, however, are more susceptible to certain diseases than fully domesticated cats.

Tritrichomonas Foetus

According to Fabcats.org, Bengals are susceptible to Tritrichomonas foetus, a tiny protozoa that causes diarrhea in cats. This single-cell protozoa can cause colitis, or inflammation of the large intestine, and can induce diarrhea with blood and mucus. Tritrichomonas Foetus is most commonly seen in cats younger than one year, but can affect any age. It is spread by direct contact from cat to cat. While most treatment of Tritrichomonas Foetus is unsuccessful, most cats overcome the infection on their own within nine months, according to Fabcats.org. While it is not known whether Tritrichomonas Foetus can infect people, proper caution should be taken around infected cats.

Cardiomyopathy

According to PetInsurance.com, Bengal cats are also known to suffer from a cardiac disease called cardiomyopathy. This disease, which attacks the heart muscles and often results in congestive heart failure, is thought to be genetically acquired and somewhat common in the Bengal breed. Cardiomyopathy can be fatal and also can induce blood clots and rear leg paralysis. Another common symptom of cardiomyopathy is difficulty breathing. Like any other condition that can potentially affect your Bengal cat, it is important to have your cat screened for cardiomyopathy by a veterinarian. If your cat is suffering from the condition, your veterinarian will likely prescribe drugs that assist the heart.

Eye Conditions

Bengal cats are also susceptible to certain eye diseases, according to PetInsurance.com. One of these is cataracts, a condition where proteins cloud over the lens. Timid Behavior In Rescue Dogs

Like people, dogs have innate character traits, such as being timid.

Giving a rescue dog a new home can be extremely rewarding, as the dog is being given a second chance, and the new owner has chosen to adopt a dog that otherwise might not have a future. Sometimes people have reservations about rescue dogs, because they assume the dog has been rejected by the original owner because of behavioral problems. This is often not the case. Like people, dogs do have innate character traits. 4. Move houseplants out of the reach of cats, or into a room which they cannot access. Many common houseplants, including English Ivy and Philodendrons, are toxic to cats. You may want to move ALL of your houseplants out of the way until you determine if your cat likes to munch plants.

Instructions

1. Go to the New Hampshire Liquor Commission website (see References) and read the the retail application process page; print the page out to reference later. After reading the page select the type of liquor license you wish to apply for; this will take you to the online application.

2. Complete the online application. Have all your business and personal information on hand before you start the application. You will be asked to choose the type of application, which is determined by how you plan to sell the liquor. The information required on the application will differ based on the application type. Once you have completed the application, print it.

3. Mail the application along with the nonrefundable processing fee. As of April 2011, the fee is $100 and can be paid by check or money order. There may be other fees depending on the type of liquor license you are applying for. After the application has been processed, the licensing commission will ask for additional paperwork and permits.

For animal shelters, the need is never-ending. Besides funding for daily food and routine cleaning and maintenance, monies are needed for adoption promotion, veterinary care, spaying and neutering, training and other services. Grants are available to help animal shelters meet some of these needs and improve adoption rates. The goal is to find a home for every pet.

Meacham Foundation Memorial Grant

The Meacham Foundation Memorial Grant, administered by the American Humane Association, provides funding for animal shelters for a number of projects. These include kennel renovations, veterinary equipment purchases, capital campaign donations, and animal environmental improvements. Grants cannot be used for general operating expenses, vehicle purchases or regular maintenance. Only nonprofit 501(c)3 organizations may apply, and applications are due by the end of February. The review process for approval takes approximately six months.

Petsmart Charities

Petsmart Charities, the foundational arm of the national pet store chain, funds the Model Volunteer Program for animal shelters. Nonprofit 501(c)3 animal shelters may submit a plan for a model volunteer program that fits their organization and $1,000 awarded by Petsmart Charities quarterly. The program's goal includes using volunteers to increase adoptions, transportation to and from veterinary clinics or adoption sites, post-adoption monitoring, e-mail and letter campaigns and creation of websites with biographies of adoptable pets.

Second Chance Fund

Also administered by the American Humane Association, the Second Chance Fund provides grants to animal shelters for veterinary care for abused animals. Funding is limited to $2,000 per agency per year, and must be used on animals that can be adopted into new homes. Routine veterinary procedures and behavior modification training are ineligible for funding. Applicants must include veterinary diagnoses, receipts or estimates in the application, along with photos of the animal.

Petco Foundation

The Petco Foundation offers several grants to help animal shelters. These include capital grants for building construction or renovation and equipment purchases, along with product support grants, in which the pet store company provides food and other necessities to shelters. The We Are Family Too grant supports spay/neuter services and product donations, while the 4 Rs Project Support grant provides money for adoption events, training, trap/neuter/return programs for ferals and general veterinary services.

Federal, state and local government were the highest per-capita employers of correctional officers in the country in 2009. The federal executive branch of the government paid the highest salaries, at $52,310, and was the fourth-highest per-capita employer. State government, the country's highest per-capita employer, was the second-highest payer with salaries of $43,710. Local government, the second-highest per-capita employer, was the third-highest payer with salaries of $41,370, falling under the national average, but still significantly higher than the next-highest-paying industry, facilities-support services, paying $31,870 and earning the spot as the third-highest per-capita employer in the profession.

Correctional officers working in California earned significantly higher-than-average salaries of $66,720. New Jersey also paid its correctional officers higher than the norm, at $62,350. In Nevada, correctional officers earned $56,600 while New York's correctional officers took in $53,600. Illinois placed fifth in the country for highest-paid correctional officers, with salaries of $51,530.

What is an EMT?

EMT stands for Emergency Medical Technician. They are the first on the scene to an accident or disaster of any kind, prepared to render immediate medical aid and transport to the nearest medical center. The requirements of this job are incredibly demanding, both physically and mentally. As an EMT may be required to pull an injured person out of a crushed car or fallen structure, they must be physically fit and very strong. There are four levels of EMT based on experience and amount of training. A level 1 EMT is the most basic and not licensed to transport an injured person; people such as firefighters, police officers, and community volunteers often have this level 1 certification. The other three levels are Basic, Intermediate and Paramedic. The final level requires upwards of 2,000 hours of training and experience.

Where Do EMTs Work?

EMTs work primarily out of their ambulances, the whole point of their role being that they are mobile and come to you when you call Emergency Services. However an EMT can be employed directly by a hospital or medical center or they can be employed by a private ambulance service. Their function is the same in both situations, but a private service bills you separately from the hospital.

How Does an EMT Spend a Typical Workday?

An EMT's workday may start at any time of the day or night, and often goes for a full 24 hours before the shift is over. As a result EMTs typically work an average of 50 hours a week, three or four days out of each week. This is because they must be ready to answer a call from Emergency Services dispatchers who will tell them where to go and who is in need of aid. Once at the scene, an EMT identifies the person in need of aid, taking note of the symptoms. If the person is in need of treatment beyond what the EMT can render, the EMT will attempt to stabilize the person's condition by means of intravenous fluids, drugs, bandages and tourniquets to bleeding limbs. The patient is then loaded in a stretcher into the back of the ambulance. One EMT drives while the other stays in the back to monitor the patient's vital signs. Once at the hospital, they unload the patient, bringing him into the emergency room and informing the doctors and nurses on staff of what's wrong with the patient as well as what treatments and drugs have already been administered. Once the patient is out of the EMT's hands, they wait for another call from the dispatcher to repeat the cycle.

TV news reporters don't get very much face time on camera. They therefore have to make the most of the time they have while telling their story in the most effective way. Both goals can be accomplished through the use of active live shots, in which the reporter moves, demonstrates and gestures while utilizing her surroundings. Follow these steps to learn to do an active live shot for a TV news story.

Instructions

1. Take a look around before you write your story. If you know you will be doing a live shot, you should plan the live portion first. Scan the scene for visuals you can refer to or props you can use in a demonstration. Use that as the starting point and write the rest of the story to fit.

2. Set the scene. When anchors toss to the reporter, the first thing they want to know is, "What's the latest?" Start with the big picture. Have the camera pull out wide and show what is happening around you.

3. Talk to the camera. Imagine that you are speaking to a single person who is behind the camera. Talk directly to that person, maintaining eye contact much of the time. Then lead that person around the scene, showing them what they should see. Notice I said "showing" and not "telling." Telling is for radio.

4. Use all 360 degrees. Don't limit yourself to the narrow range of a slightly panning camera. Have the photographer put the camera on his shoulder and follow you around. If there are things to see around you, walk in a circle around the photographer. The viewers at home will then get the full picture. Only have the photographer shoot your live shot on a tripod if the shot must be static or he is zooming in to something far away.

5. Demonstrate perspective. Whenever possible, show the viewers contrast. Standing next to something huge helps them understand how big it is. Walking from a burned field to an untouched house a few feet away demonstrates how close it came to the flames.

6. Do something. If it is possible, try to engage in whatever activity the live shot is about. If you are at a festival, jump on a ride or have a corn dog. If you are at an animal shelter, pet the dog and pick up the kittens. If you are bearing witness to the aftermath of a tornado, pick up some debris. You can also ask interviewees in a live shot to do something appropriate on camera.

7. Finish strong. If you have a package in the middle of your live shot, plan different actions for the lead and the close. Try different locations or demonstrations. Be sure to leave the anchors in awe so that they can talk about what you just showed them.

Indoor Repellents

1. Purchase your essential oil or oils at a home goods store or online. You can mix scents if you wish, just make sure you find a fragrance you and your human household find pleasing and won't mind on your furniture.

2. Test a small amount of essential oil on an unexposed piece of furniture. Wait an hour for it to dry, then check to make sure fabric is not stained.

The moving exercises in agility have equipment that must be walked, run, or jumped over. The equipment that is walked or run over has yellow sections at the entry and exit portions of the equipment.
