Shell

Reproduction

When a leatherback sea turtle comes onto land to nest, which occurs in intervals of two to three years, the female will lay about 120 eggs. Only 2/3 of the eggs remain viable and the young require around 65 days to hatch. The little turtles, measuring about 2.5 inches in length, are at high risk of predation from all sorts of creatures. Only a small fraction will reach sexual maturity, which takes from 10 to 15 years. The National Geographic website estimates that only one in a thousand survive to become adults.

Considerations

The leatherback sea turtle consumes a diet consisting mostly of jellyfish. The turtle has a global distribution, occurring in the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The reptile can swim as far to the north as Canada and specimens show up as far south as New Zealand. The leatherback sea turtle lacks claws on its flippers, which are larger than those of any other sea turtle. This feature, along with the characteristics of its shell, allows the turtle to make migrations as long as 3,000 miles one-way from their breeding grounds to the regions of the seas in which they feed.

Endangered

Some of the threats the leatherback sea turtle faces include collisions with boats, entanglement in fishing nets and lines, eating plastic that it mistakes for jellyfish and the loss of its eggs to humans, who eat them as well as the adult specimens. A well-trained dog is a pleasure to be with, so when your dog suddenly stops sitting on command, it can be worrisome. There are several potential causes for this, both medical and behavioral. If your dog is ignoring all commands and perhaps being hyperactive, behavioral issues are likely to blame. Any sudden change in the dog's routine or environment can cause him to forget his manners, so consulting a veterinary behaviorist or a dog trainer is the quickest route back to normal. If your dog is listening to you, but just doesn't seem to be able to comply, a medical reason could be the culprit.

Anal Gland Issues

Anal sac issues may make sitting painful.

If your dog has been paying a lot of attention to his rear end lately, an anal sac infection may be to blame. The anal sacs are located just inside the anus, to either side, and hold a thick, foul-smelling discharge normally used for scent marking. These sacs normally empty themselves during the course of a normal bowel movement, but they can sometimes become impacted. An impacted anal sac will swell to the size of a grape and make sitting and bowel movements very uncomfortable. As the fluid remains in the sac, it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and can eventually lead to an abscess. A veterinarian can manually empty the sacs, and she may fill them with an antibiotic ointment to kill any remaining bacteria. If an abscess occurs, it will be surgically drained and antibiotics will be prescribed.

Arthritis

Older, arthritic dogs may find it difficult to sit.

If your dog is older than seven years, chances are he has some degree of arthritis. Arthritis attacks the cartilage in the joints, especially the hip joints, causing it to degenerate. Without cartilage to lubricate the joint, every movement causes bone-on-bone rubbing that can be extremely painful and decrease range of motion. The joint becomes inflamed, and the surrounding muscles become tense as the dog tries to alleviate pain by moving gingerly. If your older dog has gradually become less active and seems to have trouble moving around, arthritis is probably to blame. A trip to the vet may result in a cortisone shot that will reduce inflammation and bring back some range of motion. The vet may also prescribe pain relievers to allow your pet to move normally again.

Injury

Rough play can lead to minor yet painful injuries.

If your dog has had an accident lately, no matter how minor, an injury may be to blame. Some dogs play very hard, especially if other animals are present. A minor injury like a strain or pulled muscle may not show up immediately, so you may not connect it to his recent activity. Run your hands over the dog's body, and gently press your fingertips into the meaty part of each major muscle. If he seems uncomfortable or in pain, he may have incurred an injury. Most injuries of this type heal on their own within a couple of days, but if the pain persists, consult your vet. She will examine the dog to make sure the injury is not serious, and may prescribe pain relievers.

Hip Dysplasia

Large breeds are especially prone to hip dysplasia.

Hip dysplasia is a malformation of the hip joint that can make it very painful for your dog to sit or walk. It can be hereditary, or it can be caused by incorrect nutrition during a puppy's formative years, but painful symptoms can crop up at any point in a dog's life. Large breeds are especially susceptible. A quick x-ray of the dog's pelvis and hips will reveal if hip dysplasia is to blame, and the vet will prescribe pain relievers and may administer a cortisone injection to reduce inflammation. In some cases, surgery may be necessary. Dogs with hip dysplasia should not be bred.

Armadillos have a hardened, but flexible shell on their backs.

The family dasypodidae, or armadillos, has 20 different species. Armadillos live in the Americas and share several physical and behavioral traits. The species do vary widely in size, however. Armadillos are closely related to the South American sloths and anteaters, sharing several physical traits with those animals.

Appearance

The smallest armadillo is the pink fairy armadillo, which grows to between 5 and 6 inches long and weighs about 3 ounces. On the other end of the scale, the giant armadillo grows to almost 3 feet long and weighs up to 71 pounds. All armadillo species have the characteristic hardened, bony shell covering the back. The shells are made up of tough plates between which are areas of skin, making a flexible shell covering. The animal's underside is vulnerable and soft, so some of the armadillo species can actually roll into a ball for protection.

Habitat and Range

Armadillos live throughout much of South America and all of Central America. The nine-banded armadillo is the only species to live in the U.S. and is native to the hotter southern states. All armadillo species prefer warm tropical climates. Because they have poor metabolism and low stores of body fat, they can not tolerate cold conditions for long. Rain forests, open grasslands and semi-desert regions provide the most suitable habitats for armadillos.

Diet and Predators

Armadillos are omnivores, eating both animals and plant material. Using powerful claws and a long sticky tongue, armadillos break into insect mounds to feed on ants and termites. Armadillos also eat a range of other insects, including beetles and worms. Larger armadillo species may feed on small amphibians and reptiles. Fruits and plant material are a smaller part of the diet of some species. The hardened shell serves to protect the armadillo somewhat, but it is not perfect. Large predators such as jaguars and pumas can easily make a meal of any armadillo.

Life Cycle

Most armadillos lead a solitary lifestyle, only coming together during the breeding season. Some species may travel in small groups. The adult armadillos get together to breed and may spend some time together courting before mating. The female is the sole caregiver and gives birth to a litter of one or two offspring. The young mature quickly and generally leave the mother after a few months. The average life expectancy for most armadillos in the wild is 15 to 20 years.

Instructions

1. Determine the state laws that regulated your adoption and that regulate the records pertaining to it. This would be the state where your adoption took place, not the state where you currently reside. Most state laws require a court order or consent form for the original adoption records to be released. However, the procedure for acquiring the consent or court order may vary.

2. Join an adoption support group. These groups specialize in knowing the most current laws regulating release of adoption records. They also may have contacts and information not readily available to the general public. The group may also assist in gaining a release of the adoption certificate or acquisition of identifying information.

3. Gain the consent of birth parents if you are the adoptee and of the child and adoptive parents if you are the birth parent. This is the easiest and fastest way to gain access to adoption records. If you or the adoption support group are able to identify the geographic location and names of either adoptive parents or children, going through a third party to obtain consent will make the records release process much easier.

4. Gather all the nonidentifying information you can about the parties involved, such as: medical information, height, weight, eye color, hair color, ethnicity, level of education, religion, educational level and even in some cases, age of parents at time of birth, age and sex of other children. This information can be gathered from adoptive parents, the agency that facilitated the adoption or the state vital records office.

5. Choose what state governments call a "third-party intermediary" to get a consent to release identifying information if you couldn't get the information any other way. The intermediary might work for the state's welfare office, the adoption support group or an adoption agency. Their primary purpose is to serve as a neutral and unconnected party that can contact the parents of adoptive children, the children themselves or birth parents. They would contact any connected individuals to secure identifying information and in some cases, consent for the records to be released.

6. Get a court order for the records to be released by going to the local district court and requesting one before a judge. The court clerk will have the necessary paperwork or you can have them prepared by a lawyer. If either party who participated in the adoption proceedings has filed an affidavit preventing the release of such information, the state will protect their rights and will not release any adoption records, even to a third-party intermediary.

No one likes to think about it, but most dog owners will have to learn treat a sick animal at some point. When a dog is unwell, most of the convalescent care falls upon the owner. The following guide can help you and your dog recover from illness, but it is not intended as a substitute for veterinary advice. After you have consulted your veterinarian, the steps below can help you nurse your dog back to health.

Instructions

1. Create a warm, soft bed for the dog. Find a quiet space, away from other pets and people, and place clean blankets, pillows or towels here. Outdoor dogs should be moved indoors for observation. Check the bedding several times a day; remove soiled linens immediately and wash in hot water.

2. Give your dog any help he needs to walk or stand. He also may require your assistance to go to the bathroom. If you have a small dog, carry him gently and hold him steady while he does his business. If you have a large breed, make a sling with a blanket or towel to support the dog while you guide him. If your dog is unable to walk, place plenty of absorbent pads or old towels under him. Alternatively, you can use scissors to modify a human-sized diaper, creating a hole for the tail and reducing the amount of cleaning you'll have to do.

3. Groom the dog daily. Wash the dog's ears, nose and eyes with warm water. Gently remove any debris by washing it away with mild shampoo and rinsing with warm water. Cut away matted hair and clip the hair around the hindquarters. If the dog has vomited, wipe her mouth with a clean cloth soaked in salt water. Gently brush the dog all over, and be sure to turn her over three times a day to help prevent bedsores.

4. Give the dog his medicine. Try hiding it in a piece of cheese or some pate. If that doesn't work, gently hold the dog's muzzle in your hand, raising it slightly. This will cause the dog's mouth to open. Place the medicine in the back of his mouth and close his mouth, keeping his head raised. Rub the dog's throat and speak to him gently. When you are convinced he has swallowed the pill, tell him what a good boy he's been and offer his favorite treat.

This same method can be used to get a small quantity of solid food into the dog.

5. Encourage the dog to eat. If she can't keep down solids, give her broth in small quantities four times a day. If the broth stays down for 24 hours, offer spoonfuls of Cream of Wheat mixed with a small quantity of canned dog food--not the chunky kind. Increase the amount of dog food and decrease the amount of cereal in this mixture over the next three days. On day four, offer dog food without cereal. If the dog develops diarrhea, switch to cottage cheese and rice for three days.
