Side Effects

Use in young dogs may delay the closing of the long bones resulting in a taller dog. Some dogs may experience weight gain, and, male dogs may begin to lose muscle weight as well as some masculine characteristics. Swelling at the initial site of implant may occur up to 14 days after injection.

Initial Effect

The initial effect of the deslorelin implant is a stimulation of the reproductive system, which may cause a heat cycle and ovulation in females or increased production of testosterone and semen in males. This is followed by a decrease in hormones leading to sterilization.

Considerations

Your female may still become pregnant for up to three weeks after the implant is placed; males can be fertile for up to two months or longer due to residual sperm storage.

What is a License?

You don't really own any software when you buy it--you own the rights to use it on a limited basis. This is what the license represents. Most software products require the use of a license number. The number is usually entered sometime during or right after the installation. The license number keeps you from installing the same software on multiple computers when it is only licensed for one computer to use. Some programs let the manufacturer know that a license is in use and which computer it is installed on when the computer is online.

Backup

Always keep backup copies of all your software, including the associated licenses. You may have receipts, emails or certificates with licenses all over the place. It's a good idea to keep all your license information in one place. Keep a copy online as well as a paper copy that includes all your license information and the software to which each license belongs. Make photocopies of your paper list and digital copies of the document that contains all your license information.

Update

Some software is installable without entering your license number directly because it is built into the disc or because the software is cheap enough that the manufacturer is not concerned about copying. If possible, try to find licenses for software that has the license number built in just in case the disc is lost and backup copies do not work.

Other software licenses require that you type the number in during installation, but some licenses limit the number of installations with one license number. When you download an image or file from the Internet, your computer keeps track of the files you've saved. A saving screen appears in Firefox, Opera and Safari once the download is complete. Depending on your Web browser, you can customize where the files are saved or save them to a designated location each time. As you save additional files, the number of files in the saving screen will increase. Deleting the save file history removes them from the screen, but does not delete the actual files from your computer.

2. Click on the "Downloads" saving screen that pops up once you've downloaded the file.

3. Press the "Clear List" button on the bottom of the saving screen.

Tell The Sex Of A Baby Turkey

Determining the sex of baby turkeys can be challenging. A young turkey's developing sex organs are difficult to see, and often, males and females look similar. Although some farmers argue that you can determine the sex of a chick by the shape of the egg it hatches from, this is not an accurate means of determining whether baby turkeys are male or female. The most effective way to determine the sex of the birds is by vent sexing.

Instructions

1. Hold a turkey chick in your hand, rear end up. Its neck should rest between your middle and ring fingers and its legs should fall between your pinkie and ring fingers.

2. Squeeze the chick's lower abdomen to evacuate any waste from the cloaca, or lower intestinal cavity. Avoid a mess by hold the turkey chick over a waste container during evacuation.

3. Lift the chick to eye level and squeeze open the cloaca; press on the outer left edge of the cloaca, or vent, with a left finger. Use a thumb and pointing finger to pull open the right side of the opening.

4. Look for a male process, a transparent bump that sticks up from the middle fold of the vent's interior. It should protrude almost to the cloaca opening. The presence of the process means the baby turkey is a male. You can use a magnifying glass if you have trouble seeing the small organs.

5. Look for a shallow depression to determine if your turkey is female. if your turkey has a small bump that looks more like a fold, it is also female.

6. Confirm whether your turkey is male or female by weighing. Male turkey chicks generally weigh more than females.

7. Observe the turkey chick; if the chick begins strutting, or gobbling and shaking its body, it's a male. Male turkeys as young as a day old may begin strutting, a mating practice that they maintain throughout life.

3. Keep up with proposed legislation regarding animals. Write to your representatives and share your opinions on bills proposed to assist or regulate animals. The majority of animal legislation is passed at the state level. You’ll find a listing of your representatives or assembly members on your state’s websites. 5. Foster a litter of puppies or kittens. Most shelters mandate minimum adoption ages and kittens or puppies that are not quite old enough must be fostered until they are old enough for adoption. Baby shower games have gotten a bad reputation over the years. Some games are cheesy; others, like the one in which guests must identify various chocolate bars smashed up inside diapers, are downright gross. Games can still be a part of a fun and memorable shower, as long as you plan them with the mom-to-be and guests in mind. Plan a mix of personalized and active games, and don't go overboard: two or three games is all you'll need. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Write a note at the bottom of each baby shower invitation, or send a mass e-mail to all the guests, asking that each person bring a baby picture of herself. Assure guests that their photos won't be damaged and will be returned at the end of the party.

2. Buy 10 baby bottles and three or four tennis balls. Set the bottles up like bowling pins in a quiet corner of your party space. Make a sign that tells guests they have three chances to knock down all 10 bottles. Wash the bottles and give them to the mom-to-be at the end of the shower.

3. Line all the baby photos up on a table or prop them up on on easels. Number the photos by placing paper numbers under each one. Set out paper and pens and have the guests guess who each baby is.

4. Set up some guessing games. Fill a jar with diaper pins or hard candy and ask guests to guess how many of each object is inside. Display some close-up photos of baby objects and ask guests to identify them, or ask each guest to write down the date and time she expects the mom-to-be to go into labor, and what the baby's weight will be.

5. Collect prizes for the winners of guessing games. Decorate square cookies to look like children's blocks and place several in a bag, or buy gift certificates for manicures at local salons.

It's no surprise that you don't see law enforcement agencies using humans for drug sniffing and similar activities. Dogs have a much better sense of smell than people. Estimates vary, but the typical dog's nose is between 10,000 and 100,000 times more sensitive than the human's.

Olfactory Receptors

Humans possess two receptors to detect smell, consisting of approximately 5 million to 6 millions cells. Our olfactory receptors are located in our upper nasal passages. The average dog's olfactory receptors contain about 220 million cells. They have an additional olfactory receptor known as the vomeronasal organ, two sacs opening into either the nose or mouth, according to the Alabama Cooperative Extension. Just as some people have a keener sense of smell than others, so do certain canines. As people age, their sense of smell declines, as do other senses, such as seeing and hearing. That's also true of dogs.

The Canine Nose

The dog's olfactory aptitude is 10,000 percent to 100,000 percent greater than the human's. The area of a dog's brain devoted to smell analysis is approximately 40 times the size of ours. While smelling and breathing goes through the same system for us, in dogs there's a separate path for air and odors. When we breathe out, the air leaves the same way it entered. In dogs, approximately 12 percent of inhaled air heads into the vomeronasal organ. Exhaled air leaves through small openings in the sides of the nose, rather than the nostrils. That also means a dog can sniff during both inhalation and exhalation processes, a feat humans can't.

Segregating Smells

When you start cooking dinner, it's likely Fido gets up from wherever he's been resting and hangs out in the kitchen. If you're putting a stew together, you can smell the beef and onions while its heating, but your dog can make out every single ingredient in the pot. That same process allows drugs trained to detect drugs or track people to focus on that particular scent, no matter what other odors surround it.

Breed Differences

Dog breeds all result from humans breeding canines through generations to acquire specific traits. Dogs bred primarily for tracking game, rather than herding or guarding, generally have better senses of smell than other canines. These breeds include the bloodhound -- the classic tracking dog -- the beagle and the basset hound. Brachycephalic breeds, those with pushed-in faces with short noses, literally don't have as many cells to detect odors on their noses. These breeds include the pug, the bulldog, the Pekingese and the Boston terrier.

One of Tennessee's most common reptiles is the snapping turtle.

Tennessee's warm climate makes the "Volunteer State" a suitable environment for cold-blooded reptiles. Since they are cold-blooded, reptiles require an outside source, such as hot rocks and the sun, to warm their body temperature. However, reptiles do not have the ability to sweat like mammals, so they must retreat under rocks or structures if they need to cool down. Most reptiles are egg-laying animals, but some species give live birth.

Lizards

Tennessee is home to nine native reptiles. The majority of reptiles in Tennessee are skinks. Skinks are similar to other lizards, except they lack a pronounced neck, and a skink's legs are usually shorter than other lizard species. Tennessee's native skinks include the Northern coal, common five-lined, broad-headed, little brown and Southeastern five-lined skinks. Other Tennessee lizards are the Eastern six-lined racerunner, Eastern fence lizard, Eastern green slender lizard and Northern green anole. The Eastern fence lizard is the longest Tennessee lizard at 7 inches.

Turtles

Tennessee has 19 turtle species and subspecies. The most frequently seen turtles in the state are the Eastern box turtle, common snapping turtle and Eastern painted turtle. An alligator snapping turtle is the other snapper species in Tennessee. Snapping turtles receive their name from the snapping of their mouths, an action these turtles make when they feel threatened. Tennessee also is home to two species of softshell turtles: the midland smooth and Eastern spiny; these turtles have leathery shells, rather than bony shells. Two musk turtles live in Tennessee: the stripe-necked musk turtles and stinkpots. Musk turtles emit a foul odor if they are attacked.

Nonvenomous Snakes

Nonvenomous snakes are snakes that do not use venom to kill their prey. These snakes either swallow their prey alive or use constriction, a method where snakes wrap themselves around their prey's body to squeeze and suffocate them. Tennessee is home to 28 nonvenomous snakes. The most widely distributed nonvenomous snake in Tennessee is the common garter snake; this snake is frequently seen in urban back yards, gardens and under buildings. The family Nerodia, nonvenomous water snakes, has the most species in Tennessee. Nerodia species are the broad-banded, midland, common, Mississippi green, copper-bellied, yellow-bellied and Northern diamond-backed water snake.

Venomous Snakes

Four venomous snakes live in Tennessee: copperheads, Western pygmy rattlesnakes, timber rattlesnakes and cottonmouths. All four species are pit vipers, or snakes with facial grooves. These grooves possess heat sensors, which these snakes use to find warm-blooded animals during the evening. The Western pygmy and timber rattlesnakes have rattles at the end of their tails. Tennessee's venomous snakes have enough venom to cause serious damage to humans. Pit vipers also have slit-shaped eye pupils; none of Tennessee's nonvenomous snakes have this attribute.

Easiest Way To Potty Train Puppies

If you see your puppy getting ready to urinate, usher him outside.

A new puppy may seem cute, at least until it is relieving itself on your clean carpet. Veterinarian Dr. Race Foster at Pet Education states that nine in 10 American pets live primarily indoors, which makes potty training a necessity in most houses. While several potty training methods exist, for people who cannot stay home all day to be with their puppies, using potty pads is the easiest method. Foster recommends getting as involved as possible to speed the process; consistency will bring quick success.

Instructions

1. Purchase potty training pads at your local pet store and set them in convenient areas around the house. These pads have chemicals that encourage puppies to urinate on them. Alternatively, put down newspaper. Whichever option you use, put some next to the door that you want your puppy to use when it learns to relieve itself outside.

2. Praise your puppy when it relieves itself on the potty training pads. The Daily Puppy recommends giving your puppy a treat or a quick belly rub.

3. Pick up your puppy and move it to the nearest designated potty area if you catch it urinating someplace it shouldn't. Do not say anything as you do this. After it finishes on the potty pad, praise it.

4. Move some of the potty pads outside once your puppy has gotten used to using them. Move your dog outside to relieve itself as much as possible. If you see it circling or sniffing as if it is about to urinate someplace it shouldn't, immediately move it outside.

5. Choose a word and use it to encourage the dog to use the potty pads outside. Foster recommends saying, "Outside," before opening the door and ushering your puppy outside. Do not encourage your dog to play outside during these times; use the word solely for potty purposes. Say something else to get your dog to relieve itself, such as "Potty" or "Hurry up." Dog Owners Digest recommends softly praising your puppy as it goes to the bathroom, and then praising it more loudly when it is done.

6. Remove the potty pads from the house after your puppy has gotten used to relieving itself outside.

7. Continue to use your key words such as "Outside" and "Potty" to encourage your puppy to go to the bathroom outside.

8. If you catch your puppy having an accident, Dog Owner's Digest recommends saying nothing, as punishing your dog by saying, "No!" and ushering it outside will only encourage it to be more sneaky about urinating inside. Focus on preventing indoor accidents by regularly encouraging your puppy to go outside, especially after mealtimes.

Care For A Siberian Kitten

Kittens get their permanent teeth between 12 and 18 weeks.

Siberians, the national cat of Russia, originated in Russia over 1000 years ago. Known as a domestic long hair cat, Siberians come in a multitude of colors and patterns. Caring for a Siberian kitten is mostly the same as caring for any other kitten, with the exception of some added grooming.

Instructions

1. "Kitten-proof" your home. Some plants are toxic to cats, so to ensure your kitten's safety lift all houseplants up out of the range of your kitten. Kittens like to explore so make sure to consider whether there is anywhere the kitten can go that could pose a danger him. For example, if you have a long, steep flight of stairs into your basement, close the door or block it off, at least until the kitten is bigger and more stable on his feet.

2. Put out a scratching post, litter box and food and water bowls before bringing your kitten home. Make sure to put the litter box in a quiet, less trafficked area, where the kitten can do its business in private.

3. Pick up your kitten and bring it home in a cat carrier. When you buy a cat carrier, make sure to buy one that will fit your adult size cat so that you only have to buy one. Fully grown female Siberians can weigh 10 to 15 lbs. and a male 15 to 20 lbs., both of which are large cats. The best practice for transporting a kitten to its new home is to put a blanket or towel in the carrier with a familiar smell, like something from the kitten's place of origin.

4. Set the carrier down in one room in the house. Shut the door to the room, open the door of the carrier and allow the kitten to come out on its own terms. Going to a new home can be quite scary for a kitten. Introducing a kitten to one room of your home at a time reduces the stress on the kitten.

5. Avoid the temptation to handle the kitten in the first few days. Kittens need time to adjust to their new surroundings. Help the kitten to adjust by showing the kitten the location of the litter box, scratch post and food and water bowls.

6. Feed your kitten three to four small meals a day, preferably with the food the kitten was already eating. Alternatively, you can leave dry food available at all times. Provide the kitten with fresh water daily.

7. Play with your kitten. You can purchase kitten toys or you can simply scrunch up a piece of paper and toss it for the kitten. You can also tie the paper to the end of a piece of yarn and play with the kitten as if you are fishing. Kittens love to chase, so you can also drag it along the ground.

8. Groom your kitten. Siberian kittens have moderately long hair so you should accustom the kitten to being brushed at an early age, which makes grooming easier for when the kitten becomes a cat. While kittens and cats groom themselves, brushing reduces the amount of shedding and the production of hairballs.

The Maltese is a breed of dog that belongs to the toy group. Maltese have a few distinguishing characteristics such as a snow white, long and fine coat, large black eyes and an upbeat disposition. Maltese belong to the group of animals known as mammals. Mammals from different species undergo very similar life cycles that include sexual reproduction, live birth, maturation, sexual reproduction and death.

Sexual Reproduction

All mammals reproduce sexually. The male's sperm is deposited into the female's reproductive tract through intercourse. The eggs of the female Maltese are fertilized and the zygotes (fertilized eggs) undergo a series of divisions and cell specialization in order to create fetuses, which will ultimately be born live.

Birth

The mother Maltese gives birth to a live litter of three to four puppies after 60 days of gestation. The mother will tend to her newborns' every need for three to four weeks as the puppies are born blind, deaf and completely helpless. Mammalian mothers produce milk to feed their young. Weaning occurs after three to four weeks, though some mothers will allow their puppies to nurse a short time longer. The puppies will be completely independent of the mother by the time they are six weeks old.

Maturation

The Maltese puppies will eat and grow until they reach sexual maturity, or around six months of age. They are born in their adult form and do not undergo any type of metamorphosis. At the point of sexual maturity, females will begin having heat cycles, or estrus, in which they can be successfully bred and reproduce. Females will go into heat two times per year. If a female is not successfully bred during her heat cycle, she will be unable to reproduce until she enters her next cycle.

Lifespan

Maltese dogs have a lifespan that averages 12 to 15 years, which is longer than many other dog breeds. This is mainly due to a lack of cardiac and musculoskeletal conditions that plague larger breeds of dog.

Other Facts

Maltese is one of the oldest breeds of dog known and is virtually unchanged from its original size and conformation. The breed has been recognized for nearly 28 centuries as a dog of the aristocrats.

Best Way To House Break A Puppy

Even the most adorable puppies can create the most terrible stains.

There's nothing quite like the joy and excitement of having a new puppy in the home. In fact, it often seems as if the pup can do no wrong. Every act and antic is the cutest in the world. That is, until the puppy uses your floor as a toilet. This is an inevitable reality of pet ownership. So too is the task of housebreaking your puppy. If you're patient and committed, however, house training your young dog doesn't have to be a frustrating or onerous task.

Instructions

1. Attach a leash to your puppy's collar and take it to its designated toilet area approximately once every two hours for a bathroom break. Use the same area every time you take the puppy out. The Humane Society of the United States recommends using a command word or words while your pup relieves itself, such as "time to go." Later, you can use this phrase as a gentle reminder to the dog that it's time to use the restroom.

2. Reward the puppy with an enthusiastic compliment or tasty treat whenever it goes to the bathroom at its designated outdoor spot.

3. Watch the puppy closely while indoors. If the pup isn't playing or being held, attach a leash to the puppy's collar and tie it to yourself or to a chair or coffee table. This way you can keep an eye on the puppy and grab it quickly if you notice it about to make a mess on your floor.

4. Take away the puppy's water and food bowl approximately two hours before bed time. During the night, keep the pup in a crate or small, enclosed area. Most puppies should be able to maintain bladder and bowel control for at least seven hours. You may, however, wish to set your alarm early or get up at least once during the night to take the puppy out for a bathroom break.

5. Clean up any mess the puppy makes in the house. Do not yell at the puppy or rub its nose in the mess. Check your local pet supply store or ask your veterinarian for products specially manufactured to deal with pet-related stains and odors.

6. Continue until your puppy no longer has any accidents indoors, but rather holds it until the bathroom break or lets you know that it needs to go outside. Depending on the breed, housebreaking may take up to several weeks to complete.

An evaluation proposal is a document written that includes all proposals received from contractors for a particular job. This proposal is written to state the contractor chosen for the job. The contractor is chosen based on information regarding past performance, price, capabilities and other technical factors. The contractor chosen should be most advantageous for the company doing the hiring and the evaluation proposal should clearly state the reasons why. Typically a weight system is used during this process.

Instructions

1. Form a team. Forming a team to evaluate all proposals helps in the process of choosing a contractor. The purpose of the team is to meet together and look over all received proposals. Some members of the team are designated to review cost factors, while others review noncost factors. Often, members of this team also are involved in creating the request for proposal, or RFP. The RFP states the exact specifications of the job.

2. Comply with requirements. A designated person, sometimes a procurement officer, is responsible for reviewing all the documents and ensuring they meet the requirements. This includes making sure the submissions were received by the deadline, that all pages of the submissions were received and payments were made, if applicable. As long as the proposals meet the requirements, each is photocopied and a copy is given to each team member.

3. Review all proposal responses. The team members begin reviewing each individual proposal, comparing it to the precise specifications of the job. If any items are missing from an individual proposal, someone may contact the contractor to ask about the omission. This, however, is not a normal process.

4. Assign a weight to each proposal. The RFP is used and weights are assigned to each individual section of it, either by the team or a procurement officer. The team members either determine weights as a group, or each team member is allowed to make independent weight decisions. The total weight of all sections of the RFP always equals 100.

5. Score each proposal. All team members make individual scores for each proposal. These are submitted to the team leader, or coordinator. The scores are totaled out and the contractor scoring the highest, overall, is awarded the proposal.

6. Create a summary. After a contractor is chosen, all information regarding each submission is recorded as a summary, naming the contractor chosen. This summary also explains the process used for determining the chosen contractor.

About Seeing Loved Ones in Heaven

The first thing that most of us think about when we consider the idea of heaven is "Will I be able to see my loved ones there?" Eric Clapton's song "Tears in Heaven," which he dedicated to a lost son, caringly captures this sentiment through the verse "Would you know my name if I saw you in heaven?" Furthermore, many people who are able to be revived after suffering brief "clinical deaths" often recount the shared experience of seeing a bright light and deceased family members waiting for them on the other side. What does the Bible itself say about heaven? Are our cultural beliefs consistent with these biblical statements?

Geography

While the Bible never directly describes the geography of heaven, the last two chapters of Revelation do explicitly describe "a new heaven and a new earth" and "the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God (Revelation 21:10)." The city of Jerusalem, which possesses a checkered past, was a holy city that was criticized over centuries by both Jewish leaders as well as Jesus Christ for straying from its holy purpose. For followers of the Jewish tradition, which Jesus and early Christians were, the idea of a new Jerusalem was heavenly. The city is described in detail in Revelation: "The walls of the city were built on twelve foundation stones, and on the stones were written the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb (Revelation 21:14)." This is the same place Jesus may have been referring to when he said, "In my Father's house are many rooms (John 14:2)."

History

On Oct. 31, 1517, a monk named Martin Luther nailed a copy of 95 criticisms of the Roman Catholic Church to the door of a Catholic Church. Many of his criticisms were centered on the issue of how easily followers of Catholic doctrine would be able to enter heaven after death. According to Luther, the church erroneously taught that believers could alter the fates of loved ones by providing service to the church in the form of 'indulgences." These indulgences were either acts or payments that would nullify sin. For example, if a man chose to participate in the Crusades, perhaps his act would nullify the sins of his dead father, who would theoretically then be permitted to enter heaven. Of course, revenue gained in relation to the Crusades would circulate into the church treasury. This displeased Luther, who protested this doctrine, and who thus became an early proponent of the Protestant church movement.

Misconceptions

When Jesus was criticized by church leaders regarding his views of the afterlife, he took a moment to clarify these views. The leaders approached Jesus with the following conundrum: if a woman marries a husband who later dies, then marries his brother who also dies, and keeps marrying other brothers in the same way right down to the seventh brother, which one will she end up being married to in heaven? Jesus' answer gives us an idea of what heaven will be like, and how loved ones will appear to us. He states simply that "in the resurrection, people neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like the angels in heaven (Matthew 22:30)." This answer emphasizes an individual's responsibility to live a good life regardless of who his spouse is. While this statement doesn't discount the idea that people will be able to see loved ones in heaven, it does suggest that they will be seen from a new perspective.

Theories/Speculation

Saint Peter is theorized to be the keeper of the gates of heaven, and he is able to decide whether or not you will be able to see loved ones inside heaven. The basis of this theory is a statement made by Jesus to Peter after Peter proclaimed that Jesus was the son of God. Pleased, Jesus informed Peter, "I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven (Matthew 16:19)." He described that Peter would be given the latitude to be an overseer of sorts in addition to holding these keys. For this reason Saint Peter is frequently depicted in cartoons, movies or other media as being the first person anyone sees before he or she is able to enter heaven.

Considerations

Not only can loved ones be seen in heaven, but they can also be seen elsewhere. Jewish theologians admit the possibility of communication occurring between Gan Eden (the abode of the righteous) and Gehinnom (the abode of the unrighteous). Similarly, Jesus tells a story of two men who see each other in the afterlife, although one of them is suffering in hades while the other one is resting peacefully in heaven. When the suffering man speaks to a representative of heaven he is told, "No one can cross over to you from here, and no one can cross over to us from there (Luke 16:26)." However, he is able to carry on a conversation in which he brainstorms his options.

Inappropriate urination is a major reason for surrender of cats to animal shelters, where the overwhelming majority get put to sleep. For the cat with urinary problems, the first step is a trip to the vet to diagnose a physical cause. Even if the cause is behavioral, there are methods to help your cat go in the litter box and not an inappropriate spot.

Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease

This disease, formerly referred to as feline urologic syndrome, or FUS, is very serious, and a symptomatic cat should be taken to the vet immediately. Signs include straining to urinate, going in and out of the litter box, genital licking, loud meowing and small drops of urine with blood. Totally obstructed cats constitute an emergency and dialysis may be necessary. Complete obstruction is most common in male cats and if untreated leads to death from uremic poisoning. Called feline interstitial cystitis, it's a result of crystals forming in the urinary tract, resulting in blockages. Two common types of crystal formation are struvite crystals and calcium oxylate crystals. Treatment varies according to type.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Feline lower urinary tract disease is diagnosed by urinalysis, which measure pH and whether crystals or bacteria are present in the urine. In some cases, urine cultures, X-rays or ultrasounds may be ordered. Besides crystals, other causes of urinary problems include bladder stones, kidney failure and cancer. The cause may be difficult to diagnose, and the problem tends to recur. Depending on the diagnosis, cats may receive anti-inflammatories, anti-spasmodics or steroids to relieve symptoms and clear the blockage. Surgery is necessary in the worst cases.

Cystitis

Cystitis is one of the most common urinary problems in cats. Because the bladder is inflamed, cats will feel as though they must constantly urinate. More common in females, cystitis is often caused by a urinary tract infection, which will sometimes respond to antibiotics. The inflammation may clear up on its own.

Prevention/Solution

To prevent crystal formation, feed a low-ash, canned food diet or a veterinarian-prescribed food. Make sure cats always have access to water. Be aware of the cat's litter box habits.

Behavioral Problems

When no physical reason for urinating outside of the litter box is found, the problem may be behavioral. Stress factors such as moving or a new pet or baby in the house can cause the cat to urinate inappropriately. A different litter box, type of litter. or location could be the culprit. If there has been no change, try another type or brand of litter or purchase a larger box. A good rule of thumb is one litter box per cat in multiple cat households. Keep litter boxes clean. Anti-anxiety medications, prescribed by a vet, have produced results with behavior-related urinary problems.

Declawed Cats

Declawed cats have a higher incidence of inappropriate urination than cats that still have claws. Possible causes include foot pain when scratching the litter, which causes the cat to urinate outside of the box.

When All Else Fails

Some cats continue urinating in inappropriate places no matter what their owners do. If the vet determines nothing is wrong and other methods are unsuccessful, determine whether it is feasible for the cat to live outdoors. Outside cats may get hit by a car, attacked by dogs or coyotes or fight with other animals---there is no question that cats are safer inside a house. If the area is relatively safe, putting the cat outside is a consideration. There are animal rescue groups that specialize in finding barn homes for cats. Another option is to keep the cat in an uncarpeted area, perhaps a basement, where it is less likely to urinate. Most cats who urinate inappropriately do so on carpets, cushions, clothing or similar materials and not on tile or concrete.

3. Get the word out that you are lookng to adopt a pit bull. Tell your friends, neighbors, vet, local animal shelters and any trusted business associates. Character references often make or break a person's chances at snagging a spot at a competitive school, calling that perfect apartment home or even adopting a pet from a rescue shelter. You might seem like the perfect candidate, but all too often managers or admissions counselors have been fooled. Checking references and making sure candidates are who they present themselves to be can be crucial.

Instructions

1. Read letters of reference with a critical eye. Determine the person's relationship with your candidate. Ask yourself questions. Does this match up with the other information you have gathered about your candidate? Does anything seem out of place? What's the tone of the letter? Is it enthusiastic and original or matter of fact and generic? Consider what the person actually says. Make notes on what follow-up questions you'd like to ask.

2. Call the character references. Introduce yourself by your name and title, state what organization you represent and then let the the person know what your applicant is seeking from you and a few details about the situation. For instance, if Jane Doe is one of three people vying for a summer camp scholarship, you should tell the reference that information and a little bit about the camp. Let the person know he was listed as a character reference for Jane and ask if he has a few moments to answer questions you have.

3. Ask open-ended questions. If you're deciding between three people for a camp scholarship, you might ask questions such as: What do you think Jane would learn most from the camp? How would she fit into that environment? Why should I choose Jane over the other two candidates? Kansas Pitbull Laws

The legality of pit bull ownership is a fiery debate across the country. According to the city council of Topeka, Kansas, a dangerous dog is any that behaves in an aggressive manner and biting is not a necessary condition. Numerous cases of pit bull attacks and illegal dog fighting have caused states to outlaw or restrict ownership of these animals. According to Michigan State University College of Law, since 2000, 38 states have passed laws restricting or banning pit bull ownership. Restrictions and bans in Kansas have been placed at the state and local level.

Breed Ban (BSL)

Breed Specific Legislation in Kansas has caused much controversy and debate. The state of Kansas has a "dangerous dog" law that outlaws any dog that is a danger to the public. However, it does not specify a particular breed as "dangerous." Although state law does not single out pit bulls as dangerous dogs, many municipal laws and ordinances within the state ban the ownership, harboring or keeping of pit bulls within city limits. According to America against BSL, 35 cities and townships in Kansas have adopted BSL legislation, including Topeka, Park City, Salina, Ulyssess, Overland Park and Kansas City. There are few exemptions for having these dogs within city limits. According to Topeka ordinance, owners are allowed to transport pit bull dogs through the city if adequate measures are taken to keep the public safe. Violators can be fined up to $499 and sentenced to a jail term of up to 179 days.

Mandatory Sterilization and Microchip

Wichita, Kansas, adopted BSL in 2009 that restricted pit bulls. Pit bull owners must have their animals microchipped. Implanted microchips allow authorities to locate the owner if the dog becomes a stray. In addition, all pit bulls must be sterilized.
