The labradoodle, which is growing in popularity around the world, results from mixing a poodle with a labrador. Typically, labradoodles appear in three sizes, miniature, medium or standard, and three coat types, hair coated, fleece coated or wool coated. Instructions

1. Devote little time to grooming a fleece coated labradoodle until her adult coat replaces her puppy coat, which occurs anywhere from eight to 14 months old. Then during the changeover, thoroughly brush her at least once a week with a natural bristle brush and mat comb.

2. Brush your wool-coated labradoodle once a month to keep shedding to a minimum and prevent matting. Use a natural bristle brush with wool coats.

3. Bathe a Labradoodle as infrequently as twice a year. They are naturally clean dogs, with coats that brush dirt out easily when dry. When you do bathe him, use a regular dog shampoo, which you should squeeze, rather than rub, through his coat. Rinse thoroughly, air dry and brush.

4. Trim a dog's nails every two to three weeks using dog nail clippers. Be sure to avoid cutting the quick, as it bleeds and is painful.

5. Shave hair around her ears and carefully pluck hair in her ear canal using blunt tweezers every two to three months to prevent ear infections and increase air flow.

6. Trim hair around a labradoodle's eyes and muzzle, particularly around his mouth and chin, as needed. Use a #10 blade.

7. Give a lLabradoodle raw, meaty bones to keep her teeth tartar free and shiny.

Many grant are available to fund animal shelters and rescue.

Millions of dollars are donated each year to animal shelters and rescue organizations helping homeless or abused animals. Many have a specific focus, such as helping farm animals. But many have grants available to help shelters and rescuers with basic funding needs such as buildings, equipment and help with spaying and neutering.

Building and Starting Funds

The Meachum Foundation Memorial Grant of the American Humane Association gives up to $4,000 toward building campaigns, capital improvements and equipment purchases that directly affect the welfare of animals in shelters. Petco has capital funds grants for new and existing buildings, vehicles and equipment. Maddie's Fund has large grants for coalitions of animal welfare supporters, including rescue operations that are researching animal welfare data in an urban area.

Operational Funds

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has grants that cover spaying and neutering operations in shelters. Petco has funds for general operations including a food bank and a silent auction to raise funds, using Petco products. PetSmart also has funding for spaying and neutering.

Rescue Funds

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals gave large grants rescue operations for horses in 2010, especially focusing on saving the lives of former racehorses. Petco also has grants for rescue and rehabilitation of animals who need to be prepared for life in a family. A gentle birth reduces stress for both mothers and babies.

In 1975, a French obstetrician named Frederick Leboyer published a book called "Birth Without Violence," advocating a new way of bringing babies into the world. He believed that cold, sterile delivery rooms, bright lights and loud noises created excessive stress for newborns. He recommended gentle births in peaceful environments, free of unnecessary medical intervention, although he did not oppose pain relief for mothers when needed.

Instructions

1. Dim the lights in the room in which you will give birth. Leave enough light that your birth attendant can see to do her work, but keep the room dim enough that your baby's eyes will not be disturbed by the light and can adjust easily.

2. Adjust the temperature in the room until it feels comfortably warm. This helps your baby adjust more comfortably to the environment outside the womb.

3. Keep the room quiet while you give birth. Ask everyone present to speak in whispers if they must talk at all. You can play soft music if you like, though.

4. Ask your birth attendant to place your baby on your abdomen immediately after birth, provided that your baby does not need any immediate medical attention. Massage your baby gently.

5. Wait until your baby's umbilical cord has stopped pulsing before cutting it. Your birth attendant can cut the cord, your baby's father can cut it or you can cut it yourself. Allowing the cord to stop pulsing before cutting the cord gives your baby all the oxygen-rich blood in the cord and allows him to begin breathing when he's ready; he does not need to gasp for air immediately after birth.

6. Bathe your baby in a shallow basin of warm water at your bedside. Since you've just given birth, and may not have even delivered the placenta yet, you'll need assistance with this. Your baby will relax in the warm water, which resembles the environment inside the womb, thus easing his transition into the world.

California Safe Surrender Law

A safer alternative for newborns

California's Safely Surrendered Baby Law allows a parent or legal guardian to leave an infant at a safe surrender site within three days of birth without fear of prosecution for child abandonment. An infant left at a safe surrender site is given medical care and placed in foster care or a pre-adoptive home.

History

In its 2000 session, the California Legislature enacted the Safely Surrendered Baby Law, sometimes known as the Safe Haven Law, as a response to media reports concerning increasing numbers of infant deaths associated with abandoned babies. The law has been amended since its enactment to protect confidentiality, expand the definition of safe surrender sites and require inclusion of relevant information in sex education classes. Legislation making the Safely Surrendered Baby Law permanent was enacted in 2005.

Safe Surrender Process

The person surrendering the child must leave the baby at a designated site within 72 hours of birth. A confidential identification bracelet is placed on the baby's ankle, and the party surrendering the baby is encouraged, but not required, to accept a matching bracelet and to provide family medical history. The safe surrender site notifies county Child Welfare Services (CWS) within 24 hours of the surrender, and CWS takes temporary custody of the child immediately.

Safe Surrender Sites

The California Health & Safety Code defines a safe surrender site as any location designated by a county's board of supervisors to accept the safe surrender of an infant or a location within a private or public hospital that the hospital identifies as a safe surrender site. Initially, only a designated employee at a site was allowed to accept a surrendered child, but the law was broadened in 2003 to remove this requirement.

After Surrender of the Child

CWS begins dependency proceedings after taking custody of the child. During the 14 days after surrender; however, the parent may reclaim the child. CWS conducts a standard investigation to confirm the parent's identity and determine the parent's ability to care for the child. CWS returns the child if there is no risk of abuse or neglect. If the child is not reclaimed or cannot be returned, the baby enters the foster care system.

Use of the Law

From 2001 through 2004, 64 infants were safely surrendered to authorities, according to the California Department of Social Services. Data for subsequent years is not available, because the law required reporting only through 2005. In 2008, the California State Auditor's Office found that the law was not sufficiently publicized to achieve full effectiveness. The Auditor's Office also found that local data reporting regarding safe surrender was often inaccurate because of errors in classifying surrendered and abandoned infants.

Get Wild Horses From The Government

National Wild Horse Adoption Day

Imagine 36,000 wild horses and burros roaming on public lands in the West. Add to this population another 31,000 that are maintained in corral and pasture holding facilities. One branch of the US government manages public lands and the wild horses that roam them. The agency gathers several thousand wild horses each year and offers them for adoption or sale.

I'll explain see the horses on-line, find the application and regulations, and how you can support National Wild Horse Adoption Day (September 26, 2009).

1. ~ LEARN ABOUT THESE LIVING LEGENDS ~

Wild horses (also called 'mustangs') are living symbols of American history and the pioneer spirit of the West. The federal government estimates that more than 36,000 wild horses and burros roam public lands in the West. Because they have almost no natural predators, they can double the herd size in four years. Without government intervention, this population would exceed the land's capacity to support the herds, and create other consequences.

The horses, also known as 'mustangs' and the burros come in every shape and color. Horses weigh between 700-1,000 pounds and burros average 500 pounds. They receive medical care and testing before adoption.

2. ~ LEARN ABOUT THE AGENCY THAT MANAGES AND PROTECTS THEM ~

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is the federal government agency that administers this program and conducts the auctions. Since 1971, BLM

has placed 220,000 free roaming horses and burros in public hands by the adoption programs. In addition, BLM feeds and cares for another 31,000 wild horses and burros each year on government short- and long-term holding facilities.

Adoptions occur on a rolling schedule, several days each month, at multiple locations throughout the US. The starting adoption fee (and average price) is $125 per animal. BLM estimates that it costs $1,000 per year or more for you to maintain one of its animals.

How Old Should Parakeets Be When They Can Be Adopted

You can usually estimate a parakeet's age just by looking.

Knowing what age to adopt a parakeet is one of the most critical questions to answer. Typically, younger birds are the most sought after, but older parakeets can bring just as much companionship and love to the right family.

Age Window

Younger parakeets, or budgies, are easier to tame than older ones. It is, therefore, generally recommended that you not adopt untrained parakeets that are older than four months. The ideal age to adopt is when parakeets are at the close of their weaning stage, which is six to seven weeks of age. It pays to know the physical signs of a parakeet's age, such as markings, to be sure how old he is.

Head Feathers

There are several varieties of parakeet, but most varieties within the prime adoption age will have bars on their heads down to the cere, the flesh spot where the beak meets the head. After molting at about three to four months of age, the feathers on the top of the head will be solid-colored, typically white or yellow. Some varieties, such as lutino or lacewing, however, have no such tell-tale feathering.

The Eyes

A second way to determine a young parakeet's age is his eyes. Up to the age of four months, a parakeet's eyes are black, but as he ages, the irises fade to light gray or a brownish color. From four to eight months, his eyes will have dark gray irises. At eight months, the irises will settle to their permanent color. Know, however, that albino parakeets will always have reddish-pink eyes, no matter the age.

Older Birds

While newly weaned parakeets are typically the most recommended, don't dismiss older parakeets, particularly ones that have been socialized. Young birds learning to socialize or even fly can be hard to handle and generally require a lot of patience and attention. This can be especially taxing on first-time owners. Older parakeets that may have lived with other families or even been through some kind of trauma often adapt well to new parents and form lasting bonds.

Get A Rabbit To Drink Water

Water is crucial for a rabbit's digestion.

Water is the most important nutrient in a rabbit's diet. Rabbits typically consume twice as much water as they do food; and on hot days, they may drink up to four times as much water as food. So, if your rabbit has stopped drinking, it could be a sign of illness. Even if your rabbit is healthy, it is important that it drinks enough water: Rabbits can easily suffer from dessication of the intestines, if they are not well-hydrated. Fortunately, there are some easy ways to facilitate your rabbit's drinking.

Instructions

1. Use the proper vessel. Sipper bottles, like those often used in hamster cages, are available for rabbits. While some rabbits may find it more natural to drink from a bowl. Try a heavy, lead-free ceramic bowl, as your rabbit may be tempted to play with a lighter plastic bowl..

2. Clean the water bowl or bottle with warm water and mild detergent: Then fill it with fresh water. Fresh water tastes better, and water bowls are prone to soiling, because they can easily get hay or litter in them. Sipper bottles can be cleaned with a bottle brush. Change the water frequently.

3. Check the sipper bottle's tube. Make sure the water is free-flowing and unobstructed. If so, your rabbit may not know use it. Smearing a bit of jam on the tip of the tube will encourage the bunny to check it out more closely.

4. Lower the temperature. Rabbits fare better in cooler temperatures, and usually drink less water as the temperature rises.

5. Add something tasty to the water. Normally, pure water is recommended for a rabbit's delicate digestive system; but if your rabbit is at risk of dehydration -- mixing a little bit of Pedialyte or unsweetened juice, especially carrot or apple -- into its water, may encourage drinking.

6. Try force feeding your rabbit. Gently squirt water into its mouth with a syringe. This should be done only as a last resort, if your rabbit is sick and at serious risk of dehydration. Consult your veterinarian first.

Train Your Nintendo Dog

"Nintendogs" is a DS game that allows you to obtain one of a number of virtual dog breeds, including Dalmatian, beagle, Shiba Inu and Yorkshire terriers. You then are responsible for feeding, grooming, walking and training your dog. The DS allows a unique manner of play since you can talk to your dog through the microphone so that the dog learns the name you give it and learns the commands you choose to use. You can also use a stylus on the touch screen to tend to your new puppy. Regardless of the breed you choose, following a few simple steps will help ensure your training is successful.

Instructions

1. Begin your training in a quiet place. The microphone on your DS can pick up ambient noise, making it harder to train your Nintendo Dog. Be sure when you are speaking to your dog that you keep the DS microphone approximately 6 inches from your mouth. This will also help avoid breath noise.

2. Keep your voice inflection consistent. The dog will learn how you say particular commands as well as its name. Changing your pitch or inflection can impact your success.

3. Get your dog's attention before beginning training. Call your dog's name and make sure it is content before training begins. You can check on basic needs of your dog in the status screen. A hungry, thirsty or dirty dog will not pay attention as well as a happy, content dog. Also, if you have a new dog, make sure the dog is acclimated to its surroundings before beginning training.

4. Choose commands that consist of multiple syllables. For example, "lie down" is easier for the program to understand than "lie."

5. Say your command while you have your dog's attention. Follow the touch screen recommendations for training to accompany your voice command. For "sit down," pull the stylus down across the screen while you say the command.

6. Repeat your dog's name and commands frequently. Like a real dog, the Nintendo dog will learn its name and commands quicker if it hears them frequently.

7. Reward it when it responds and does well. You can either pet your dog by using the stylus or you can drag the light bulb that appears to the dog's mouth. The light bulb will only appear when your dog understands the command you give it. When you drag the light bulb to your dog's mouth, your dog will eat it like a treat.

8. Continue to practice with your dog until it responds consistently. Do not start a new command until your dog masters the first.

The History Of Rescue Dogs

The most famous example of a rescue dog may very well be Lassie, the canine who has saved lives plenty of times on the small and big screens. Real-life rescue dogs are often portrayed by the St. Bernard, which was the first dog used for search-and-rescue purposes. Today, a number of different working breeds, including Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, German shepherds and border collies work as rescue dogs in various ways

The First Rescue Dogs

The history of the rescue dog begins in the St. Bernard Pass, a route in the Alps between Italy and Switzerland. It is named after the Augustine monk St. Bernard de Menthon, who founded a hospice and monastery there sometime between 980 and 1050. The hospice has remained in operation ever since, and sometime between 1660 and 1670 the monks received their first dogs. They were the St. Bernard dogs of today, only smaller and directly descended from the Asiatic mastiffs from Rome. While originally used as guard dogs, they were quickly switched to a search-and-rescue function.

St. Bernard's Pass

At the turn of the 18th century, the monks of St. Bernard pass were regularly training St. Bernards to rescue travelers who were lost in the pass. Marroniers, who were servants that accompanied people traveling through the pass, often brought dogs along with them and found their great sense of smell could help them find people trapped under snow a huge help. These marroniers used the rescue dogs often to save many lives in the pass. Between 1790 and 1810, more than 250,000 of Napoleon's troops trekked through St. Bernard's pass. Not one lost his life, and many of the soldiers told of how they were saved by rescue dogs, who dug them up when they were trapped under snow and laid on them to warm them until help came. Rescue dogs would work here for over 150 years.

Rescue Dogs in the World Wars

Rescue dogs were trained and used elsewhere in the world in later years. Though not directly influenced by St. Bernards, they were just as effective. During the World War I, rescue dogs used their heightened sense of smell to find wounded in the United Kingdom. The Red Cross also used rescue dogs at this time, also in their wartime efforts. In World War II, the U.S. began to use rescue dogs as well in the Dogs for Defense program. They used a few different breeds, most commonly Newfoundlands.

Rescue Dogs in the Alps

After the World War II, rescue dogs were introduced into the Swiss Alpine Club to find victims of avalanches in the Swiss Alps. This group previously used a prodding technique that involved rescuers walking around pushing a pole into the snow in hopes of hitting a person trapped underneath. Rescue dogs proved to be much more successful and useful. Similar groups over the years have adopted rescue dogs to aid in avalanche rescue. They are widespread throughout the Alps (where they are also trained) to this day.

The American Rescue Dog Association

Bill and Jean Syrotuck created the American Rescue Dog Association (ARDA), which is the oldest group of its type, in 1972. The organization brought together various rescue dog groups that had formed at the state level and gave them a forum to trade training techniques and information. In this way, the ARDA was able to help train and to provide capable search dogs to those who need them. Similar organizations have popped up in Europe and across the world, where search dogs are most readily needed and seen.

Modern-Day Rescue Dogs

While rescue dogs have longest been put to use in the battlefield and on mountains, today they are used to rescue victims of all sorts of disasters. In 1996, the Search Dog Foundation (SDF) was founded in Ojai, California, and has trained rescue dogs to work alongside firefighters in California, Florida, Utah, Oklahoma and New York. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has also started training and putting to use rescue dogs in first-response roles in disasters, everything from tornadoes in Oklahoma to the 9/11 terrorist attacks to the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans. FEMA has 28 response offices across the United States, all of them employing rescue dogs.

History Of The Bichon Frise

Bichon Frise dogs are very popular with dog lovers because of their small stature, curly white coat and playful nature. They make excellent lap dogs and companions and have shown themselves to be very loyal. The Bichon does not shed but because its fur is curly, it needs daily attention in the form of brushing. Otherwise the hair becomes matted and the dog becomes unhappy. This breed of dog has a long and interesting past, having been a popular breed with the Spanish more than 800 years ago.

Ancestry

The Bichon Frise ancestry goes back to the all-round working dog, the Barbet. From the Barbet breed came the Caniche line and the Barbichon breed. The Barbichon line split into six Bichon-related breeds: the Bichon Bolognese, the Coton de Tulear, the Bichon Havanese, the Lowchen, the Maltese and the Bichon Tenerife. The Bichon Frise is descended from the Bichon Tenerife line.

Origins

Although the past of the Bichon is a little obscure, it does contain references to Spanish sailors who brought small white dogs with them when they first traveled to the Canary Islands. On the island of Tenerife, the Spaniards introduced the Barbichon to the locals, who were quite taken by them and began to breed them for themselves. Later in the 1300s, Italian sailors visited the island of Tenerife and rediscovered these small, white canines.

Bichons In Europe

The Italians brought the Bichons back to Europe, where they quickly gained in popularity with the Italian nobles and the French, during the French Renaissance and the reign of Henry III. Enthusiasm for the breed went up, with Spanish artists using Bichons in their work and Napoleon III enjoying these dogs as well.

Common Dogs

Then the popularity of Bichons tapered off until the late 1800s, when they went from royal court dogs to working class dogs (or common dogs). No longer were these curly white dogs found with nobles and royalty alone. They were seen in the town streets, performing tricks in sideshows and living with the average person.

Bichons In America

In 1933, the name Bichon Frise was adopted for this breed by the International Canine Federation. The word frise means "soft curly hair" and was aptly added to Bichon, which was adapted from Barbichon. The notoriety of this breed continued to increase. In 1934, it was added to the stud book in the French Kennel Club. It wasn't until 1956, however, that the first Bichon Frise was born in America. In 1972, they were admitted to the stud book of the American Kennel Club.

Raising A Siberian Kitten

The Siberian breed has existed for at least 1,000 years, and is the national cat of Russia, according to the Cat Fanciers' Association. Breeders introduced this natural, semi-longhair breed to the United States in 1990, where it is still quite rare. Siberians have a dog-like personality, enjoy following their owners around and can leap great distances. Provide your Siberian kitten with a safe, playful and loving environment to help it grow into a healthy, happy cat.

Instructions

1. Bring the Siberian to a veterinarian for a checkup and ask the breeder for its veterinary record of vaccinations and prior examinations. Have the kitten checked for diseases or external and internal parasites. A reputable breeder should not sell you a kitten that did not have a previous veterinary exam or one that suffers from mites, fleas or lice.

2. Prepare a room or a space for the Siberian kitten in your home. Furnish the room with food and water dishes, along with a litter box. Avoid using clumping clay litter for a kitten under 3 months old, as it may ingest the litter and develop an intestinal blockage, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Place a cat bed in the room for the kitten to snuggle and sleep on. Choose a larger bed the kitten can grow with, as Siberians can grow to be up to 20 lbs.

3. Feed the kitten a canned kitten food three times a day and allow it to nibble dry kitten food between meals. Pick up the canned food after 15 to 20 minutes and refrigerate any leftover portions. Growing kittens require more calories than fully grown cats, and the Siberian may eat more than other breeds because of its larger size.

4. Place the kitten into the litter box a few times when you bring it home to get it familiar with the location of the box. Scoop the litter box daily and completely change out the litter weekly. Clean accidents quickly with an enzymatic cleaner to prevent the kitten from going back to the spot again to eliminate.

5. Play with the kitten each day using toys on wands or strings to engage its attention and give it the exercise it needs. The agile Siberian loves to jump, so provide a cat tree to climb and jump on. Give the kitten a scratching post to stretch and groom its claws on as well.

6. Brush your Siberian kitten each day with a slicker brush, for a few minutes at a time. Siberians oats require brushing to prevent mats from developing in the fur and control shedding. Treat the kitten with a favorite food after the brushing sessions to reward it for good behavior.

Car Shows In Milwaukee Wisconsin

Car shows in the Milwaukee area come in all shapes and sizes. Some are small events put on by local clubs while others are professionally planned and held in convention centers. Some offer free admission for spectators but all have a fee for owners who want to exhibit. Typically, the event will contribute at least part of the fee to a local charity.

Greater Milwaukee Auto Show

The Automobile Dealers Association of Mega Milwaukee puts on the Greater Milwaukee Auto Show. It is a nine-day event from February into March at the Frontier Airlines Center. Attendees can see the cars firsthand and learn about new automotive technologies.

World of Wheels

World of Wheels is part of the Championship Auto Shows custom show car series and is put on by Manheim Milwaukee Auto Auctions. MAVWC Volksfest

The Original Memories Car Club holds an annual car show in July at Scotty's Bar & Pizza. Raccoons

Storks, Sea Gulls and Other Birds

Since baby sea turtles are black against white and beige sands, they become prey for flying creatures that spot them from the air. Storks, sea gulls and other birds that peruse food along the beach are all predators to baby sea turtles as they make their way to the surf.

Large Fish and Sharks

Once they arrive at the surf, baby sea turtles now have large fish and sharks to contend with as they are still at risk. The small fluttering limbs of the baby sea turtle are no match for the fish and shark fins that allow these predators to move swiftly upon its prey.

Collect A Urine Specimen From A Dog

From time to time, your veterinarian may require you to bring in a urine sample from your sick dog. While collecting a urine sample from a person is a fairly easy task, doing the same with a dog is a little tricky. You can't force your dog to "hold it" while you get in position, nor can you make your dog aim for your container. Taking your time and paying attention to your dog's urinating habits will make this task much easier.

Instructions

1. Prepare your supplies before you take your dog out. Put your dog on a leash, your gloves on your hands (you will get urinated on) and remove the cap from your container. Hold the container in your dominant hand.

2. Take your dog outside so that it may urniate. Stay close to your dog while it finds a place to urinate.

3. Slip the plastic container under the urine stream of your dog. If your dog is male, you place the container in front of the object it is urinating on. If your dog is female, just slip the container underneath her when she squats. Do not let go of the container while you are collecting the specimen.

4. Replace the lid onto the container and take the specimen to your veterinarian. If the specimen is not taken to the doctor within two hours of collection, place it immediately in the refrigerator.

Squirrels generally eat what they find when exploring, and vegetation such as this is not difficult to catch because it can be picked off trees while climbing or running and exploring along the ground.

Insects & Small Animals

While the squirrel is generally thought of as a vegetarian, this may not always hold true. All species of squirrels will raid the nests of birds when the adults are away, taking the eggs and scampering off with them. Squirrels will often pounce on small baby birds and insects and enjoy them for a meal. While this is not the preference of most squirrels, when their typical vegetarian diet is not available, they will eat these animals and insects. The flying squirrel is the exception to this rule, as it is known to eat small animals and insects, perfecting the sneaky robbing of bird nests.

Gardens

Squirrels love gardens. They get their food from gardens typically by waiting for all other animals and people to be out of sight and then they go in, explore and pick the fruit and vegetables that they would like to eat. Many times they take more than they can eat and they bury the food for later. This allows for them to always have access to stores of food that they will later sniff out with their keen sense of smell.

Bird Feeders

Bird watchers often complain about the sneaky ways of squirrels. Squirrels will easily climb up a tree, down a branch, and then sit on the feeder, shaking it if necessary, to access the seed held within. They are often intimidating enough to the bird that they will freely feed from the bird feeder any time.

Litter

Squirrels are not picky about what they eat. Squirrels that live in areas that are populated by humans often feast upon whatever humans leave behind. Any type of food items are free reign, with fruits, vegetables and nuts being preferred, but snack foods, fast foods and anything else left behind is usually worth exploring.
